Accessibility for Theme&Design, DCParis

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

Posted up a suggestion on the Theme & Design track for DCParis about including some web accessibility material.

I think a lot of what we're working on/discussing here could be gelled into a solid panel discussion or presentation directly applicable to Drupal themers and the T&D track looks really interesting already.

Anyone Planning to go to DCParis?

mgifford's picture

I'm pretty sure that the number of people who want to go to DCParis and the number of people who are going to be able to go to DCParis are a lot different. However, would be good to start thinking about who might be there to meet/discuss and hopefully present on this important topic.

Kate, are you planning on going? There are a number of folks on this list from Europe, hoping there might be a good turnout.

I'm not planning on going at this stage, but please add your name to this list if you're likely to go and might be interested in feeding into this process that Kate's started.

They've got a good start on their site from the looks of it - http://paris2009.drupalcon.org/

I'm 95% on going, just need

I'm 95% on going, just need to clarify my travel plans for the end of Summer, I would certainly want to be part of this.

Count me in

I'm going to beg/borrow/steal/go into debt to go to DCParis, particularly if there's interest in bringing accessibility to the forefront in some area. In actuality, I have a poster in at a conference in a nearby area around then, so it looks like I'll be in the neighborhood.

I'm in the process of drafting some accessibility materials into something presentable for DCParis. Exciting! (Perhaps I get too excited about accessibility-related things, but it's worth it =) )

Tempted

Despite being a total drupal n00b, I'm getting more and more tempted to see if it's doable to get to DCParis, especially if there's an opportunity to bring accessibility more to the forefront.

(don't worry Kate, you're not the only one who gets excited about accessibility-related things :))

Check out the proposal

Submitted a proposal for DC Paris about WCAG 2.0 for Themers/Developers and the work being done in this group:
http://bit.ly/a1v31

But this is not a shameless plug!! I'd like to know if people who are going to DCParis would like to see anything covered that isn't here. Likewise, if someone is going and would like to co-present on this topic, please let me know as well.

Drupal, accessibility, WCAG, & ATAG, in Paris!!!!

I'm in the 95% category as well, and may I say, I'm very excited to see a good build up of a11y discussion before this DrupalCon. My contribution to the sessions will hopefully be a panel discussion or lecture about the Authoring Tool Accessibility Guidelines (ATAG) and Drupal insert shameless plug: http://paris2009.drupalcon.org/session/accessibility-drupal-whos-fault-it

As my skills are not very strong in the development of Drupal sites and more on the theming, it's always been a challenge to bring this discussion of Drupal as an authoring tool that must aid the end-user in creating accessible content to the Drupal community. The responsibility of accessibility seems to always get thrown to the themers. And while this may be the case many times, I think that many sites being built with Drupal these days are getting the luxury of plenty of wire-framing and prototyping that could benefit from plenty of forethought in regards to the accessibility of the tool and the end content.

So, does anyone have any good ideas for use cases and scenarios that'd best bring to highlight the importance of applying ATAG guidelines to Drupal?

This is great!

Would be terrific to have two a11y workshops in Paris. If you're registered, please vote for these two great sessions!

Also, as far as adding ATAG scenarios. Wouldn't comments, user feedback & surveys be some of the most important as far as user generated content go?

Well, that and little things like registering to the DrupalCon which is very difficult with Jaws.
