General Routing abstraction layer module

I'm not a PHP coder, but I would like to share an idea... What about developing some kind of "general routing API" module, to standardize how routes are managed within Drupal. Some kind of abstraction layer for routing webservices (like Google or Bing ones).

Sometimes it happens we have to present to the user the information which is easier reachable, not what has a shorter radius distance. A kind of "time proximity". Which is would not be radius distance, nor any other spatial distance. It would be the time needed to reach one point from another, taking into account the streets you have to walk, the speed limits, etc etc.

Sometimes it happens we have to filter nodes/users which are near to a computed route. Or to check whether some users are about to walk the same route.

We already have the Get Direction module here. Perhaps it could be a start point.

What do you think?

I am also not a php developer. And I have been searching for such a functionality for about a year.

I found out that Geofield module has the ability to draw lines on a map. But thats all. No routing module yet.

It would be really great if we can use a routing service in a module. I am not sure how the drawn route in a node can be stored into db, but there may be a way to do it.
