User group meeting

Join us for our May Toronto Drupal User Group meeting on Tuesday, May 22nd. It will be held at York University, in room 280N York Lanes (directions below). Note the change in date and location from previous meetings.

Need to build an e-commerce website?
Everett Zufelt will talk about Drupal commerce by giving us a tour of Commerce Kickstart install profile and the commerce_shipping module.

If you have other topics you would like to add to the agenda, please add them in the comments below.

Location & Directions:
Thanks to Evan (el56) for making these arrangements.
The room is "280N York Lanes", on the second floor of building #24 on this map. Also viewable here.

We'll try to have some signs to help you find the room. The room is equipped with a dedicated PC, projector and broadband.

The building is immediately adjacent to the TTC bus stops on campus for these routes:

  • 196 York University Rocket (express from Downsview station and Sheppard Station)
  • 60C Steeles West (from Finch Station)
  • 35E Jane (express from Jane Station)
  • 106 York University (from Downsview Station)
  • 107 Keele North (from Downsview Station and Maple)
  • 47 Keele (from Keele Station)

The campus is also very easily accessible from Brampton using the Züm express buses and from York Region (Woodbridge to Markham) using Viva express buses and local routes.

GO Transit also serves the campus with frequent (double decker) buses from Square One, and many points from Hamilton and Guelph to Oshawa via Highway 407. Nearby parking is paid but plentiful.

See you there!

If there problems finding the new location

I realize this month's location is far from the usual. If there any any problems, or if you need details about transit, contact me.

Cost of parking?

andy.smith's picture

Evan - do you know how much it would cost to park on campus?

There is a parking garage

el56's picture

There is a parking garage right behind the building but it's about $5/hr.

The pay-and-display lot behind that is less expensive -- I think about $3.50/hr

I'd really like to know more about the e-commerce modules in general and the Marketplace module specifically. Can Everett or anyone else talk about that?

Marketplace doesn't exist

Everett Zufelt's picture

It looks like marketplace no longer exists, and is now mutual_credit. I know nothing about this module, but do see that one future development goal is to integrate with Commerce through a custom commerce payment method.

Ubercart Marketplace

HJulien's picture

Hi Everett,

I'm referring to Ubercart Marketplace (http://drupal.org/project/ubercart_marketplace) which allows for multiple sellers. It looks like it's still active for Drupal 6 which is what I want.

still active?

sunward's picture

looks like the module is abandoned. Last beta was March 2010. Dev release is still not recommended. No sign of 7 work.

I would be careful on relying on this module.

Drupal Commerce Marketplace functionality

Everett Zufelt's picture

I don't have any experience with that module, but hopefully someone else in attendance does. There is no Marketplace module for Drupal Commerce. Depending on your use case we can talk about how it might be possible to achieve what you are looking for with Commerce/Rules/custom code.

Drupal Commerce for 7 and Ubercart for 6?

HJulien's picture

I am using Drupal 6 so Drupal Commerce is not an option. There are just too many modules I need that are not available yet for 7. My understanding is that Ubercart and Drupal Commerce are similar but for different versions of Drupal. Maybe my understanding is incorrect.

In any case, I'd be happy to learn more about it at the meeting.

Did you decide on a solution

Anonymous's picture

HI Helene,

Did you ever decide what you are going to do? I am also looking for a Marketplace option. I have Drupal 6 and am not sure that I am ready to upgrade to Drupal 7 just to have the Commerce option. Plus, it didn't look like there was an option to do multiple sellers with DC. It seems like Ubercart Marketplace is the best option, except that it is worrisome that it is no longer being updated. Is that true?

Thanks for any advice.

Heather

Ubercart and Marketplace

HJulien's picture

I am going ahead with these modules for Drupal 6 even if they are not being updated.

I believe ubercart was pretty stable before the team moved to Drupal 7 Commerce module. I pay a senior developer (to answer questions only) who has worked with ubercart several times who can help me navigate through it. Although he has not worked with the Marketplace module, I don't feel like I'm totally in the dark. And I'm not afraid of writing PHP since I have a developer background. If the worst happens, I'll pay someone who can help me with whatever I can't do myself.

I do get frustrated at times but nothing stops me. That attitude has served me well so far. Another thing I found helpful was that I bought a book on e-commerce using PHP to get a better understanding of the parts of e-commerce I need to put together.

This is the week I start it so if you want to check in with me later, feel free.

Thanks!

Thanks so much for your response. I would be interested to see how things develop with your site. Could you let me know when its up and running?

Heather

Sure no problem!

Sure no problem! Won't be until the fall though.

DrupalCamp 2012

ramynassar's picture

Would be worth maybe chatting about plans & timelines for a 2012 DrupalCamp event. I'll be at the meeting for 16:30 but probably have to check out by about 18:30 at the latest because of another commitment.

Follow up on Net Tuesday and TechSoup

HJulien's picture

Hi Ramy,

There seems to be no way to contact you directly so I'm posting this here for you to get back to me. Maybe I should have created a new convo thread...

I contacted Tierney Smith regarding the possibility of doing something with Net Tuesday meetup group / TechSoup.

I mentioned DrupalCamp in the fall with the possibility of Drupal 101, Drupal 20, etc. sessions for Net Tuesday members.

I also mentioned the possibility of getting some Drupal developers to put on a Net Tuesday session on Drupal. I was surprised at the number of people at the session I attended earlier this year that were interested in Drupal but had heard of the steep learning curve and were hesitant. Also, this might be a good way to find out if there are opportunities for contracts or volunteer opportunities there.

I'll let you know what I hear back.

Hélène

This would be a good thing to

cleaver's picture

This would be a good thing to have as on open discussion here... Hélène, if you click "Create Discussion" on the right, you could start a thread and have everyone contribute.

TechSoup

That sounds great, thanks Helene!

You can reach me directly at ramy@myplanetdigital.com

I'm signing up for Net Tuesday meetup as well :)

Cheers,

Time

cleaver's picture

Should the time be 4:30pm (16:30), or 6:30pm? I'm thinking that 6:30 should be correct.

I can make it at 6:30 and I expect most won't be abe to make it at 4:30. If it really is 6:30, could anyone go there at 4:30 to put up a notice of the correct time?

Time of meeting is 6:30pm Toronto time

tjc's picture

Time of the meeting is supposed to be 6:30pm Toronto time. My apologies everyone. We should have access to the room at 6pm.

That's why I was two hours

That's why I was two hours early, thought I lost my mind.
