User group meeting

Start thinking about the June Santa Cruz Drupal user group meeting on Tuesday June 5th, 7pm to 9pm...

Open to ideas as to what to talk about!

Kristen has been creating a Drupal 7 site with some fun modules including:

  • Media
  • Field Collection
  • Field Group
  • Bean

and could demo these and explain how they can make things better for your content editors.

(She had previously said she'd talk about Installation Profiles but they are such a pain that maybe another time... ;)

Other ideas? Anyone going to SVDUG tomorrow? Anyone going to Sac Camp?

Comments

Coolio!

I've used the others -- media is pretty much de riguer on D7 sites for me -- but I still have a hard time understanding the rationale for Bean. Generally, for anything fancier than basic blocks, I start using Panels. Now I hope to find out when to use it.

Silicon Valley DUG tomorrow

I might be able to go tomorrow night to the SVDUG. If so, I would be able to drive people who want to go assuming that you are willing to go early (leaving ~2:30). I would bring my laptop and meet up with Aimee to do some work somewhere near the Apigee office.

Other modules

Some other modules that I've been working with are:

  • Entityform
  • Field Slideshow
  • Meta Tags Quick (alternative to Meta Tags)
  • Panels Everywhere (I think I demo'ed this before though)
  • Superfish (alternative to Nice Menus)
  • Workbench (+ WB Moderation, WB Files)

in case anyone is interested in learning about any of those.

Also, I'm building off of the AT Panels Everywhere starter theme (which is based on Adaptive Theme), so I can show you how that works too.

Fun stuff! And... hopefully my biz partner (Aimee) will be down to join us for the meeting. We are doing this project together.

Views

I recently finished a project where I exposed my own custom data to Views. This was a D6 project but the process is the same. I can talk about how to do that if there's interest. Leave a comment if you're interested.

July meeting

Paul - can you do this for the July meeting? I will be out of town but I think there will still be most of the usual members coming.

I will be out of town that week also.

Base Themes discussion

Among the discussions at the June meeting while reviewing the site tha Aimee and Kristen built, was which starter theme (if any) to use. I've recently been using Omega because of its adaptive abilities out of the box. But yesterday John Albin Wilkins had this announcement of Zen 7.x-5.x, and it sounds pretty tantalizing.

Among other things, he claims an extremely minimal set of markup, to which you can add more if you need it the old fashioned way in the .tpl files, but also recommends getting just the markup you need for your fields with the Fences module ("fences enclose fields", or so I learned at Drupalcon Denver). Fully HTML5, adaptive, fluid grids, SASS/Compass and a bunch of other buzzwords.

As I mentioned at the meeting, I'm away for the next month+ and will miss the July meeting, but I'd sure like to hear about anyone's experiences using the new Zen...

I've been using

I've been using http://drupal.org/project/sasson as a base theme and have been liking it. I've always been a little leery of the extra markup / UI checkboxes of Omega etc and prefer a leaner solution myself. I'll look into this new version of Zen. I'll take a look into Fences - it looks like an interesting concept and something that would set apart Zen from similar base themes out there.

Sasson uses a liquid 960gs compass plugin for layout - the zen grids syntax is pretty neat. I might just give this a try - if I do I'll let you know how it turns out. I've never been a fan of grid systems semantically until they've been written as compass plugins. :)

One thing to note: if you're pulling in custom Compass modules or want newer features you're better off using the official ruby compiler, the PHhamlP port is fairly behind the times.

WARNING!!!

kristen pol's picture

Hi all! I just determined that Field Collection doesn't support revisions yet :( so do not use Field Collection until this issue has been resolved...

I'm going to be busy trying to figure out what to do... perhaps I will make my own D7 fields.

For those who will be coming to the July 3rd meeting, who wants to present / talk about something? So far the following won't be coming:

Anyone else can't make it?
