Prijedlog: Definicija i namjera GDO Balkan grupe / Suggestion: Definition and purpose of GDO Balkan group

UPDATE: Please, take a moment and express your thoughts in the following poll: http://groups.drupal.org/node/240288

For the english (i-was-in-a-hurry-not-so-perfect-translation) see below.
I suggest also that we continue discussion in BHS languages - and in English for people who can't write in BHS...

Povijesni kontekst

Što mislite?

Historical context

Whole idea about gathering of Drupal community from the Balkans area initially began with the idea to organize Drupal Balkan event which would gather interested parties from Ex-Yu area - from area where Bosnian / Croatian / Serbian (BHS) language is spoken - because all people from that area / countries can understand each other perfectly.
From the first suggestion till the first Drupal Balkan Summit (held 8-9 October 2011) went little time - mostly thanks to the great work from the Novi Sad (Serbia) Drupal community.

Second, also successful summit, was held recently (2012, 26th May) in Sarajevo (Bosnia and Herzegovina), and we are currently preparing and planing to hold next one in November this year at Zagreb (Croatia).

Although Slovenian language is not so close to BHS language, because of great (cultural, historical, etc.) similarity and showed interest from the Slovenian Drupal community (especially in Sarajevo), we hope that the fourth DBS in 2013 will be in Slovenia. ;)

Suggestion

As I mentioned above, it's a fact that Bosnian, Croatian and Serbian (also Montenegrin) languages are so similar that we can understand each others without any problems. Although every community have their specific web page (also GDO groups), it occur to me that it would be great to have one common place where we could on our own languages discuss about questions and problems we meet in everyday work life - here I'm mostly thinking about providing support to Drupal newcomers. IMHO this is extremely important for spreading Drupal word and making our Balkan (Ex-Yu) community bigger - which after all makes Drupal platform better.

At the end of my presentation at Sarajevo I mentioned how Drupal Commons distribution could provide to us that place - but, probably this is irrelevant because GDO will soon be powered with Drupal Commons 3 (which is built at Drupal 7).

When that happens we will have at our disposal following tools for organizing Balkan (Ex-Yu) community:

Already included in GDO (6.x):

  • Discussions
  • Events
  • Polls
  • Wikis
  • Jobs

Extra features @ GDO (7.x):

  • Q&A - ideal for providing support
  • Ideation

To be more concrete, my suggestion how to organize that place:

1) Language

Official (preferred) languages would be Bosnian, Croatian and Serbian (+ Montenegrin).
Of course, for any kind of inevitable situations we could use English language.

2) Moderators/admins

I think it would be fair to include at least one admin from every involved community.

3) Intention

Intention of this place would be further expansion of Drupal in local communities who can talk or/and understand BHS languages via providing support. Because of this is important that 99% of content / communication is in BHS languages.

Second main focus would bi on Drupal Balkan Summit event - we could use this place as base for transparent organization / documentation and relevant place for information about event himself.

Third, of course, hanging out, knowing each others and growth/strengthening of Drupal Balkan community - everything that we will get as side effects from above mentioned two main aspects. :)

4) Place

As we already have Drupal Balkan Summit brand, IMHO it would be logical to proceed with it and use this new (ad hoc twitter created) group as above mentioned "place". Honestly, I was planing to write this whole text and put it into Croatian, Slovenian & Serbian GDO groups before we actually create group, but, obviously it happened other way. :P

I'm aware of fact that Balkan is wide region and that some people from another non-ex-yu communities appeared - but, IMO it's extremely important to establish a place where we could exclusively talk in BHS languages. As I understand most of folks from Slovenia don't have problem with that - I personally only can guess with 50% of accurateness what somebody talk/write in Slovenian. :/

What is your opinions about all this stuff?

Pozdrav svima

damijanc's picture

100% podupirem inicijativu i nadam sem velikome uspjehu.

Veseli me ovako pozitivan

slashrsm's picture

Veseli me ovako pozitivan odziv.

I believe this is a great initiative and I hope we can get things moving with Drupal in this region.

Svi predlozi zvuce super i

pivica's picture

What about albanian

h4ck3rm1k3's picture

Hi there,
I think you are missing the albanian speaking minority in your discussion.
I have been working with groups in prishtina and tirana on translating drupal and promoting drupal.

thanks
mike

Hi Mike, Yeah you are right

pivica's picture

Hi Mike,

Yeah you are right we are missing representatives from those groups and not only those groups, and they are welcome to join.

Although this initiative is called GDO Balkans, most of the people here are from former Yugoslavia and that is why we do not mention for now a lot other countries from Balkan. Which does not mean that they should not be in this group, it just means that they are not in this group/discussion for now.

FYR - kosovo

h4ck3rm1k3's picture

Hi,
I dont need to remind you that our group in prishtina represents part of the albanian speaking minority in the former republic of yugoslavia, there are albanian speakers
in almost all the countries. I know for a fact of people in montenegro, serbia, and macedonia.

we are organizing a conference on sept 8th and it would be great to get some speakers to come down. We would be able to cover costs for qualified speakers.

Hi everyone, great

nplejic's picture

Hi everyone,

great initiative.

Personally, I have no problems in keeping the discussion limited to English if it means more people following & participating in the group. Perhaps we could write more official posts like announcements and calls to action in English, and other more localized threads in BHSCG(...)? There's always machine translation as well. :)

Also, it seems like someone (Mike?) registered the #drupal-balkan channel on irc.freenode.net -- feel free to join!

Molim vas iznesite vaše mišljenje u sljedećoj anketi: http://groups.drupal.org/node/240288

Hvala.

Hello to everyone and thanks for such great feedback and good vibrations!

We created excellent momentum, we already have #drupal-balkan IRC channel, yay! :)
Also this is first time since the existence of Drupal Balkan (Summit) that we caught signal from Montenegro Drupal people - hi there Dino! :D

Honestly, I'm a little bit confused now..as things are evolving, it's obvious that we already have in group people who can't understand BHSCG language, so, according to that, should we maybe communicate only in English?

Actually, that's not even real question, the right question is what we want to achieve within this group, what is the goal?

After we answer to above question, we'll automagically get preferred language for communication - and then we can start planing other activities e.g. world domination and stuff. ;)

Please, take a moment and express your thoughts in the following poll: http://groups.drupal.org/node/240288

Thanks!

Pozdrav Balkancima iz Australije :)

Eto dragi moji Balkanci jedan član (ako me primate) i podrška iz Australije.
