Regarding an Australian national Drupal event:

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

LCA Wellington January 2010

Bevan's picture

Sime, Did you see http://groups.drupal.org/node/23718#comment-84300?

I've submitted an application for an LCA miniconf in Wellington in January. I'm not sure yet if I'll be able to follow through as organiser (and haven't committed yet). But the possibility certainly exists.

And my second vote would also be the last one! ;)

Perhaps "Australasian Drupal Event" would have made a better title?

Linux

We could extend it further down south and some Linux Penguins could come too :)

One thing I would like to

gordon's picture

One thing I would like to see is a bigger event, as in over multiple days. Like a 2 day event to start showing we have the numbers and the skills to organise a full week long geek out.

Also doing it over 2 days is easier for people who have to travel inter-state, makes it more worth while.

I agree, good idea, Gordon.

Canberra is the logical choice

Justin Freeman's picture

Canberra is the logical choice as a location. Half-way between Syd & Melb and fairly central to Eastern Australians.

Go Canberra :)

I'd like that. I'd probably

I'd like that. I'd probably drive via Lakes Entrance.

Any Drupal event would help

icekin's picture

Australia has a lack of drupal national events of any sort, so seeing one would be a welcome change.

Canberra is considerably

Bevan's picture

Canberra is considerably more difficult for international visitors since it's an extra flight. There are dirt cheap flights to Sydney and Melbourne from NZ cities, but Canberra would probably double air fares.

International Airport

Justin Freeman's picture

We have an International Airport on the way in Canberra, so it will be easier in future.

Damn you Canberra for being

sime's picture

Damn you Canberra for being so strategically placed!! And having poetry slams!!!

I say build a whole new city just for this event

Matto's picture

Take the Canberra strategy and put the thing where NOBODY wants it.

"Medrupalis"

Other naming suggestions welcome.

Druplundera - emphasis on

sime's picture

Druplundera - emphasis on the 3rd syllable please.

Yes please

solveitnow's picture

I'd love a national event - not fussed what it's called or where it is and happy to help if I can. Just please give plenty of notice so I can organize optimum flight deals, get time off work, organize children etc. 1 or 2 months would be great.

Oceania

kattekrab's picture

I'm not a new zealander, but I'd reckon we should work towards an Oceania event and work together with kiwi drupallers to make it happen. There's some big drupal success stories in unzud.

possible restrictions

amaree's picture

I belive there are restrictions with a Con event... which we would need to make it australia wide hence why i am suggesting getting the local camps up and running with success... if we have a aus wide event then it would still only be a Camp which may not be more bennificial then running local camps im up for yearly camps in Meb, Syd, Bris, Can etc there is a lot of work that was done for the sydney camp as well as a lot of sponsorship organization for a national camp, Ryan has also been doing a lot of work for Syd Camp in Nov, having one or two month notice for people is good however planning a good event with sponsors takes longer hence the suggestion of at least having another bris and syd camp this year and then the three camp groups get together to discuss the pros/cons and outcomes of each camp to help plan a national event if there is a national event then it should be planned based on the findings of local camps...

CiviCRM

Vietyank's picture

I'd like to see CiviCRM topics included in such an event.

Perhaps a 'Distros' Track

Perhaps a 'Distros' Track could be considered - seeing as a few are popping up now.

DrupalCon Oceania

xtfer's picture

I'm all for a DrupalCon Oceania, or something. My vote would be Sydney though. As a Kiwi, living in Canberra, its a pain to get between the two. Melbourne/Auckland/Wellington also good.

The Drupal Association decides who holds DrupalCon's... and currently they are focused on US/Europe. A Southern Con is probably long overdue.

DrupalCon South America has

Bevan's picture

DrupalCon South America has loosely been slated for June 2010. It remains to be seen if enough people will step up to the plate to organize it.

I attended the meeting at DrupalCon DC with some Drupaleros (Spanish-speaking Drupalers) and Drupal Association Director of Events Cary Gordon (though I had to leave early and missed the photo). Cary made it clear that he would like DrupalCons to shift away from a bidding competition towards a more centralized decision & collaborative approach. Cary also suggested that he would very much like to see DrupalCons in other parts of the world, and that this hasn't happened because there hasn't been enough momentum, action, organisers, proposers.

Until now, that is, perhaps...?

Sponsorship

Justin Freeman's picture

With all the recent talk about sponsorship on another thread. Is it possible to get funding from the Drupal Association for an Australian DrupalCon? Isn't that part of what the D.O.ASS is for?

Agileware, Australian Drupal Developers
http://agileware.com.au

No. The Drupal Association

Bevan's picture

No. The Drupal Association exists for many reasons, one of which is to provide seed money for official DrupalCons (but not Drupal camps). Not that this is not funding because DrupalCons are expected to break even or make a profit and that profit goes to the DA.

Professional event organizers often charge fees which are taken out of revenue before profit though, so you could potentially create a "job" – of sorts – for yourself if you want to organize one, and have the DA's approval. Though the idea is that the lead organising person/company volunteers or is sponsored by their company (who get's exposure and recognition from it).

Bevan/

No? Dude, I think you mean YES!

Justin Freeman's picture

Bevan, I think you mean YES!

If we organise an Australian Drupalcon then I see no reason why we couldn't approach the Drupal Association with a request for some funding.

From http://association.drupal.org/about/introduction

Organize and/or sponsor Drupal events, and represent the Drupal project at events.

Might even be able to get funding for a Drupalcamp or similar. Better luck doing it this way than thru the Australian Government (as discussed in other threads).
