Next Monday, Michelle Ziegmann (UC Berkeley Educational Technology Services) will cover some advanced site building techniques. I recently launched a site for an online course that featured a game-based pedagogical approach. The game is designed to facilitate an actively engaged community of peers focused on student artwork and internet citizenship. Through their activities in the site, students earn "badges" that indicate their progress in the course.

99% of the features on this site were built through creative use and combination of contrib modules, including Views, References, Userpoints, Flag, Media and Entity Views Attachment. Michelle will share several features of the site and methods used for building them. In the end, I hope you all will walk away with some new ideas and approaches in site building.

Did I mention FREE PIZZA? Kevin Costa of SynBerc has offered to sponsor the meeting by providing pizza for all.

SynBERC is a multi-university research center headquartered at UC Berkeley. SynBERC is one of twenty NSF engineeering research centers across the country. These centers are all required to report detailed metrics of performance to the NSF (e.g., publications, presentations, courses created, demographic and institutional details across universities, etc.). SynBERC developed and deployed a Drupal website in 2009 to collect such data and host our public website. The success of SynBERC's system encouraged us to open-source the site code to the other centers facing the same data collection requirements. The website is now being used by six engineering research centers in the US. It has saved thousands in web development costs, and has provided a common framework that brings the engineering research centers together to identify best practices in data reporting and business practices.
