What Next? Where should be the Next Big Drupal Camp?

Well, Drupal Regional Day was here and we had meetups on the same day by all the Drupal Communities across India.

Next comes the big event, having a day long or probably a 2-day Drupal camp with collaboration from all regional communities.

Drupal Camp Hyderabad was a huge success, with efforts from all Regional communities, as mentioned here

Delhi has already come up with an announcement on the camp with a tentative date: http://groups.drupal.org/node/261478

One big agenda of the next Camp should be mobilizing the Individual Developers working at various organizations to make it to the Camp. We definitely had good turnout at DCD Hyderabad, with people from Delhi, Bombay and all regions. Putting the CXOs aside, where were the grass-root level developers from these regions? I feel, this is where the turnout needs to be improved. Enabling them and mobilizing them should be #1 motto this time to make sure that the participation from all regions, is in spirit, and not just in letter!

I feel Delhi had its fair chance last year in Nov 2011. May be Bangalore or Chennai, with active Drupal Communities, probably the oldest too should get their fair chance in hosting the event this time.

What is your say? Should be great if we could come up with a tentative venue and date, that would gives a heads up to the regional communities to do their bit in making the coming camp as BIG one!

We at Drupal Hyderabad decided to organize a Drupal Hackathon(Module Contribution/D7 Porting/Reviewing sprint) on Oct 27th & 28th to mobilize contributors & developers.

People can join the Hackathon to mentor/participate online too at IRC channel #drupal-hyderabad. Also we can have a national level Hackathon in the month of November in Hyderabad(Tentative). I prefer Hyderabad because it is reachable to Mumbai, Pune, Chennai, Bangalore, etc. Delhi & Kolkata members have to take the extra effort to attend this.

Anywhere! Everywhere! How about several :)

Mostly camps are organized by local folks, so I think it's usually one location's independent desire rather than a coordinated thing. I will help to organize something in Bangalore if the community is interested. I'm also happy to help with connections to sponsorship and/or promotion with the DA and Acquia.

We have already having and have had several localized camps. But I feel the Drupal Camp Deccan in Nov 2011 was a great experience, which can not be compared to any of the local camps! It was a "Drupalcon", for most Indian Drupalers who haven't/couldn't made it to any Drupalcon yet.

Till we have a "real" Drupalcon happening in India, having an annual Drupal Camp Deccan will definitely help keep up the spirit and uniting all the regional groups out there, the way it did an year ago!

I believe Bangalore, Hyderabad,Chennai and all the major IT hubs in the country must have a Drupal Camp.

Reason
-- If you host one in Hyderbad, the local guys from Chennai and Bangalore will get left out. Guys like Jacob, Chakrapani, Tanay would have the finances to travel intercity and attend this. Even the CXOs, Managers, Sales reps, etc. will get there as it is a good hunting ground for them.
-- Why would a guy who is just 1 year into Drupal spend minimum Rs.1000 for travelling + another Rs.1000 - Rs. 2000 on accommodation to come anywhere, when he does not even know what a Drupal Camp offers him. Not to forget the time he will be investing in this.

In my opinion lets make this year about local awareness and participation. Make every little person in the Drupal world know what he/she is worth to us and how Drupal is going to be part of his/her world.

Lets give everyone a chance.

I would like Drupal Camp Deccan to be held in all these places
--Bangalore
--Hyderabad
--Chennai
--Mysore
--Any other city/state/district in South India who wants to have an event.

Working toward an annual national camp is a great idea! Bringing the coordinators of different groups together to help make it happen, help promote it, and help each other is a very powerful way to not only grow the community, but also support the community as it grows.

It does not replace regular local camps and meetups - it extends them, and is a chance to bring more people together, and attract bigger sponsors.

It's important for group organisers to coordinate with each other to avoid clashing dates. Remember that encouraging people to speak at local camps and meetups means they also get to build experience in presenting their ideas to others.

I have still never been to India - but one day I hope to come! A large Indian Drupal event could be just the excuse I need ;-)
