Canada-Based VPS Recommendations

I was wondering if any Canadian Drupalers had any recommendations to share regarding solid Canadian-owned VPS providers with data centres located in Canada.

I'm looking for:

  • unmanaged plans
  • Xen-based virtualization (preferably)
  • security and reliability (cost is not a primary consideration)

Most of us like Linode and other US-based providers, but I'm specifically inquiring about Canadian-owned/located providers. Thanks!

Carat Networks

I've hosted several clients' Drupal sites at Carat Networks (http://www.caratnetworks.com) in the past, and have been very happy with their service. Their prices are good, the plans are decent, and they were very responsive to my queries.

I can't however recall whether their virtualization tech is Xen-based or not. I somehow doubt it, but you never know. Can't hurt to drop them a line and ask.

OpenVZ not Xen

They say on their web site that it is OpenVZ, which means it is not Xen for sure.

From past experience with several clients, Virtuozzo/OpenVZ sometimes has performance problems when it comes to disk I/O throughput.

iWeb in Montréal

Hey Toronto group... I saw this post and felt I should reply. I use iWeb in Montréal and it is suitable for what I'm doing. Although I'm just using a basic dedicated server I have put an OpenVZ kernel on it. They noted this once when I put in a network support request, basically telling me I'm on my own for performance issues, and that is fine by me.

They also offer a VPS-host plan, and I think they do generic VPS plans as well.

As @kbahey mentions, Xen seems to be a bit nicer in terms of consistency but I'm personally more familiar with OpenVZ so I went with that. In my case I control the whole machine though, so that gives me the power I need when I need it.

A Few Providers

In case it's of some use, here are a few providers I turned up that appear to meet the criteria in my first post. I should emphasize that I have no experience with any of them, so I can't speak to their quality of service.
