MediaFront Code Sprint Preparation: help needed

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

This Sunday is the MediaFront code sprint, and I want to go in ready to contribute.

In an effort to get familiar with the MediaFront module I set up a simple site on WebEnabled and uploaded a 30 second AVI video; and after 4 hours I cannot get it to play. Has anybody else here got it going? I tried using the instructions found here:
http://drupal.org/node/1563580 and http://drupal.org/node/1563584 and http://drupal.org/node/1563586.
I have the player, and an image with a play button in the middle; but nothing happens when I press play. Any help would be appreciated. My test site is at http://kooopa.dev4.webenabled.net/; if you respond I'll give you the admin login.

Thanks

James

I do not think it is a file format issue; have tried avi and mpg

Audio works, but not video

SirBlogaLot's picture

My interpretation of 'media' includes both audio and video; am I wrong concerning the MediaFront module? Does it play video?

On the http://drupal.org/node/1563580 installation guide video formats are included in its list:

"a3) On the Media Settings screen displayed by Drupal, choose Media as Field Type. Leave Media Type as Media Content. In the Allowed file extensions box, enter mp4 m4v mov flv f4v ogg ogv wmv vp6 vp5 mpg avi mpeg mp3 webm wma"

Progress: can embed UTube videos

SirBlogaLot's picture

I can embed UTube videos, I just cannot upload video files of my own.

youtube vids will embed

youtube vids will embed without mediafront so youtube is probably not a good test.

It has been my experience with mediafront that it is a "cranky" module at best, I say cranky because it will just work or it won't.
When it works, it works great until the next update - but most of the time, it just won't work.

The last time I tried using it with a D7 install, I just set up the setpoint and it just worked with anything I threw at it - mp3, mp4, avi, everything.

I look forward to this bug squash because it may bring this wonderful module up to a reliability status that renders it usable.

James,

I pinged Travis, the maintainer of the MediaFront module about this issue, his reply was:

Yeah, we need to better document this, but AVI is not a supported media type for MediaFront. I do believe that there is already a documentation page about accepted media encodings, but maybe that page should be more apparent.

I will be working this week to get some better development documentation written for the sprint this weekend.

Thanks,
Travis.

I tried to find the documentation that Travis was referring to, but couldn't...

Additionally, the files need

Additionally, the files need to be encoded properly as well. There are different encoding methods for mp4 videos.

I was working with mediafront almost a year or so ago, and managed to find their test videos. These videos worked with mediafront and I added them to a github repo: https://github.com/benhosmer/HTML5-Test-Videos

You might give them a shot.

Thanks, the test videos work

Thanks, the test videos work; obviously there are alot of 'got-ya' in encoding and formats... things that Utube has overcome so people like me take it for granted. The obvious work-around would be to upload to Utube and then embed the link. However, in that case; all the MediaFront module is providing is the option of placing a photo over the player to identify the content.

If all you want to do is play

bhosmer's picture

If all you want to do is play youtube videos, mediafront may not be the right tool for the job. There are much more simpler ways to do that.

If you want to play HTML5 enabled videos that are cross-browser compatible, and retain control over your videos, then mediafront would be a better fit.
