I think we should learn something from WPML Multilingual CMS plugin for wordpress. Yesterday I made site that was too simple for Drupal in Wordpress and at the last moment client asked for multi language support. My hands went cold. Used WPML and was surprised how easy, fast and simple process was comparing to Drupal - most importantly because of KISS aproach to many parts of plugin and how it works.

Drupal's i18n can be made more like that

Actually, we're the authors for this WP plugin. We started with a very similar GUI as Drupal's i18n, then got tons of (constructive) criticism from users saying it's way too complicated.

These are the usability changes that we did:

  1. Change the huge setup form into a wizard, asking one simple question at a time.
  2. Create an overview page that shows the status of different settings that need to go in different places.
  3. Separated between 'basic' and 'advanced' functions. Many users can do just find with the basic setup, but are overwhelmed by the number of settings they need to go through.
  4. Reviewed the terminology and made sure it's all made for humans.

This work took us about 4 weeks and results are amazing. After that, even sheer beginners are using WPML successfully and advanced users are even happier.

Something like that can be applied to Drupal's i18n, and we can help in that process.

Sounds fantastic, I shall

Sounds fantastic, I shall sample this on WP.. In drupal, the main difficulty arises due to the interaction with all the other modules (paths, menus, etc) - at least to a newbie like myself.. I am looking forward to and hoping for improvements in D7

Thansk for your attention,

Max
