Durban Drupal Group

We encourage users to post events happening in the community to the community events group on https://www.drupal.org.

I have been asked to gather Drupalites in Durban to startup a local group. Can anybody therefore give me indication of how other groups are functioning and what is the objective for such a group. What is the community contribution and what benefits has to be offered to a member. What resources has to be contributed or demanded. What structure has to be followed in such a group, what skill level is required or not required etc. etc.

I have willing participants and they are keen to become part of it. I look forward to hear from you guys.

Durbs here we come!

Riaan Burger's picture

Ian! You're the man!

Thank you so much for putting effort behind this. I really appreciate this and I'm so excited about a new Durbs group!

Up here in Johannesburg we also have an Ian hosting our Drupal meet-ups. He will be the guy to ask. But here's a few things that may help.

We usually meet around 18:30 and have a smoke-break in the middle. Meet-ups can last late, even as late as 11 because they can be quite exciting and information-packed.

Starting exactly 18:30 doesn't happen. As with DrupalCons, much of the value, if not most, are in conversations in hallways and such before, during and after the meet.

Ian always provides us with beer ;-) There's usually enough for two or three per person. Some people bring snacks too (crisps packets make a noise, so they're tough to enjoy while someone talks). Maybe just ask if people can bring a little something to snack on for themselves and another person (some will forget and this shouldn't be a blocking item to attendance). Pack of biscuits, some cheese items etc.

Make sure you have a TV or big monitor attached to a PC with internet (or a laptop to begin with). This is where you guys can show stuff to each other. Ask everyone to prep some URLs if they have to in case they forget them and want to show something.

Open with introductions, everyone gives they're name and what they do, perhaps also where they work.

Then we usually start with presentations. Just ask some of the attendees if they've worked with Display Suite, Custom Formatters, SASS or what they want to hear about. Then get one or two people who have passing familiarity to just show the basics. Time-box these talks to 30min or less.

Follow that with unconferencing (sp?): Go around to everyone, each person needs to mention something they found interesting since you met last. A project they worked on, a discovery of a cool site etc.

Once you had your first meeting, you can ask the guys there what topics they don't have skills in that they want to learn more about. The DASA guys have plans to send members to the national meet-ups like your own to come and do talks. So we'll then find you the best person to come down to Durbs to your next meet-up and join in. Possibly regularly send someone as time and finances allow.

Times

Riaan Burger's picture

Oh - we meet once a month on the first Wednesday for the user group and once a month on the third Wednesday for the DASA meeting here in Johannesburg. Once you have a date set, remember to create an event here on the groups, but also on Meetup.com.

IRC

Riaan Burger's picture

One more item... get int he habit of keeping an IRC client open and sitting in the #drupal-za channel.

http://groups.drupal.org/node/292628

There are of course several other Drupal-related channels that are very insightful to hang in too. I just like how the South African help each other out when they get stuck with a quick Drupal item and how it builds local bonds.

IRC Not helpful

Studira's picture

Riaan I am sorry to say but I have only had one member of the IRC helping me out and I must mention him - UberEllis. I am almost daily on that group and ask but no response is given.

It is kinda sad because the overseas guys are more helpful. Not sure if the SA community on IRC is not very strong because I only see on average about 6 people on there.

IRC Needs You

Riaan Burger's picture

;-) Yes, we have few people on there. Which is why you should be in there too. I see you there now ;-)

Really, we so have a lot to live up to compared to some counties, but we're also way ahead compared to others. I've seen people help each other tremendously on IRC in #drupal-za. Of course, with help coming second to bread and butter and drupal talent so scarce, it usually comes in the form of pointers in the right direction and not troubleshooting.

Web Development in general a frustrating experience

Studira's picture

A few years ago I started engaging myself in the world of websites and being online. What a shocker it was for me as a business owner to have gone through 3 developers, R35,000 in cash and still had NOTHING to show for it.

Just there and then I decided to resort to my failsafe action and that is to do the job myself. Coming from an IT background it took me not too long and after many nights of research I decided to ventured on the daunting task of trying to teach myself Drupal, which was not well supported in SA at all, but nevertheless I pushed on. Now, many months later I can kinda help myself to setup fairly functional sites. Because it was mostly to do stuff for myself and not make it my business, I approach some hardcore individuals and companies to help me out on some projects but it is their "Bread and butter thing" so it was a dead end for me.

The reason for me to have agreed on starting a Durban Group is mainly to help others like me, promoting an awesome open-source platform, become more knowledgeable and to have personal access to industry guru's and therefore breed young skilled developers to take on the daunting task of producing quality projects in SA.

I hope my objectives and that of the core community is aligned. That way it would be a pleasure taking my own time and utilising it to the benefit of others.

Social Media Integration

Studira's picture

Is it possible to make the discussion streams integrated with Social Media sharing so that we can promote conversations here to people that normally lives on social media?

Scrape and Custom Module

Riaan Burger's picture

Not is any point-and-click way that I can think of off-hand. But a scraper may well do it. Custom code of course.

Checking in here does mean you check in where Drupal happens. Unless Groups.Drupal.org moves to another system, it's a good idea to check in here anyway for any serious Drupalers. There's more than just the South African group on here and every Drupaler's interests will vary, so no use aggregating all or a pre-selected list of items to another social system.

I did think of writing one though, but more specific to our needs: To aggregate attendees that confirm attendance through this SA group and through meetup.com so organizers can get a better idea of how many people will attend events. I know the CT guys use eventbrite (though it's got no Drupal events listed for SA right now) and you seem to prefer Facebook. So maybe in future (and I mean months ahead looking at my current program) such a system would bring those in too.

It's good that we have so many ways to tackle things and some are better than others for different groups of us. But I think it's at least important to cross-post to this group for events. It's where (correctly) drupal.co.za point to and where an outsider would expect to find SA information.

Drupal Durban Bootcamp

Studira's picture

I am thinking of organising a Drupal Bootcamp for the developers in Durban that is not very familiar with Drupal. What support can we anticipate from other groups or individuals? Please let me know.

Quite a bit, I hope...

Riaan Burger's picture

In my time keeping away from local social Drupal interaction due to the commercially hijacked nature I felt it had, apparently there was two camps held. So I'm sure the human resources are there.

Some of those very resources may be a little overstretched right now, but since I'm sure a camp takes a few months to prepare, they may very well become more available by that time.

Maybe create a task on the asana task tracker for DASA, assign it to yourself and we'll gather comments there on how to support it. Then create a separate discussion topic here on Groups.Drupal.org for it too with some of the talking points like national and more specific location, who will be prepared to travel where, sponsors, pricing, topics, date etc.

Bootcamp

Studira's picture

I am thinking about a very low key camp. Just an introductory series of sessions over 2-3 day period. One or two facilitators will be fine. Not sure if there is presentation material out there that will deal with the type of content that a newbie would need to know?

Local helping hand - Bomoko

Studira's picture

I just want to give credit to Bomoko, he has been helpful in our local FB group and because this Durban group is but in the infancy stage we need all the help we can get. Big ups to you Bomoko.

This is the kind of spirit that others, those that are not use to this community, have to see so they can become part of the Drupal family.

IRC Helper - Burningdog

Studira's picture

Big ups to Burningdog on IRC, he helped me a great deal and that is what I believe the community is about. We sometimes do not have the time but just that 5-10 minutes can be invaluable to someone else. The person that was helped can then later in return help others and so the cycle continues.

Well done to you Burningdog!

Drupal group Durban

OllieB's picture

Hi,
Do you still have a Drupal group meeting in Durban?
Thanks.

Phoned a bit earlier this year

Riaan Burger's picture

I phoned earlier this year to find out how the CT and Durbs guys are doing with regular meet-ups and how the DASA can help.

Cape Town looks like it will be quite nice this year. Excited to see how that's coming together and I'll cheer lead all I can for that.

Durban didn't turn out to be completely ready to start up again and I planned to write a bit of a longer story about it. Just didn't have time to do so yet. Essentially, it would be great to start finding just who would want to attend, then see of we can help bootstrap it a bit.

OllieB, you keen?

Hi Riaan, Yeah I would be

OllieB's picture

Hi Riaan,

Yeah I would be keen to attend. I am fairly new to Drupal and enjoying all the flexibility and extensibility it offers compared to Joomla. I'd be keen to join a group to share ideas, help each other out and possibly collaborate on some projects.

Look forward to hearing more!

Kind regards,
Ollie

Welcome!

Riaan Burger's picture

It's so awesome to discover Drupal once you worked with Joomla! hey. The last time I actually developed with Joomla! was when they just forked from Mambo. Only maintained a few Joomla! sites since then.

The upcoming Drupal 8, if you may have followed some of it, will be so much better still that I really can't see how anyone will still voluntarily choose Joomla! over it. On the fast brochure ware side of the market where I used to still recommend Joomla! to friends that just want to learn to put their own site together have also been eroded by so many new and amazing frameworks.

You're welcome to fly up if you can make it and come visit a Johannesburg user group meet-up until we can get the Durbs one off the ground again. It should also give some insight into how a great meet-up works which will in turn help the Durban one once you attend... or help organise? Helping organise doesn't have to be that much work: For example, just someone posting and maintaining the meetup.com notification helps a lot. Someone to buy some samies, someone to bring a few beers and yes, someone to put it all together and host (which, granted, can be a bit more work but with several people helping out that won't be too troublesome). Perhaps think of a talk, 30min or so, comparing Joomla! and your new found Drupal for the first talk and come try it out here in Johannesburg - it's very social and laid back, so not a formal speech-talk.

That sounds great, I would

OllieB's picture

That sounds great, I would love to. Since I'm new to Drupal and only have about 5 - 8 hours a week to devote to learning at the moment, my main need is to get up to speed as fast as possible so I can start developing sites for clients. I am working full-time as a project manager at the moment but want to move into full-time web site development work later this year all being well. I'd be keen to fly up to attend one of the user group meet-ups in JHB and organize meetings here in Durbs. I'll keep an eye out for details, and would be happy to put a talk together.
Thanks !

On our Agenda...

Riaan Burger's picture

We're just still busy with getting the Cape Town meet-ups rebooted, but as soon as we're done there, we have Durban in mind for some assistance - hopefully we'll learn a lot from the Cape Town organisation and will be able to tackle drubs better.

Remote

bruceclothier's picture

Hi chaps,

Been developing Drupal for about 6 years. Started a business in London then moved back to Pietermaritzburg to marry my wife whose business is not as mobile. Brought my London clients with me. PMB is a bit of a tech wasteland as much as I love the outdoor life here so I have to reach out to Durban and rely on my existing overseas clients to survive. Not that its hard, my clients have been with me for years, I'm very fortunate in that respect.

I see Riaan and the other CT and JHB guys activity on these groups, its really brilliant. Very envious of the community life. Being the father of two sub-four-year-olds and living so remotely, I would probably be a pretty disappointing contributor to any group, but I'd love to keep contact and learn from the rest of you guys.

Cheers.

Bootstrapping

Riaan Burger's picture

Hey Bruce,

We have so many parents in the groups now and there's both plans being made and plans already quite along for more parents ;-) Family comes first and it's only by relying on each other than we are able to fill in the schedule enough to make some progress. Often parents can't make it to meetings and meet-ups and only know that at the 11th hour.

Lee's working on virtualising the meet-ups, so they are often live on YouTube now. We'll probably have to fund raise a bit more to get better camera, microphone and computer equipment for that and be sure that it works every time before we start promoting the live sessions a bit more. They are also interactive: I attended the last DASA meeting from home because of a flu.

Some requirements on my time, lovingly and always available to my daughter and granddaughter (new) are also partly what kept me from making it to Durban this year already for a meet-and-greet.

Much of our work also comes from international agencies. Nicely does away with tender documentation and bidding process and allows one to spend all that time on building better products. Also seriously cuts down on meetings.

One thing I noticed when looking around at KZN, Drupal companies are hard to find. But Drupal is just a tool, and web development companies there are all over the place. So I gathered a list of 30 companies and their contact details. The thinking is to invite them to the first meet-up and to make the topics non-Drupal web development with just one Drupal topic each time. That should allow the interested parties to migrate to Drupal if it is a tool that suits their requirements while also keeping any Drupal attendees well informed about other web topics.

In Johannesburg we often talk about non-Drupal topics. The last meet-up the two primary talks were about Varnish (by Lee) and then a lawyer (Ravick) discussed intellectual property and answered questions for us. The one before Kagiso walked us through his very first exposure to a computer at breaks in high school in a rural area to his modern job in Johannesburg and the pitfalls and excitement along the way, then Andre presented a high-level overview on MVC. So we've gone two months without explicit Drupal talks, even while they were tied back to Drupal often in questions and relevance.

GitHub Repo: https://github.com/kagisoM/starting-with-web-dev

GitHub Repo: https://github.com/andre-artus/mvc-slides

We're trying to make the slides as complete as possible and share them on GitHub so that other national meet-ups' potential speakers can just fork them and use them there too.

Remember to sign up to the meetup.com group for Durban http://www.meetup.com/Drupal-Durban/ so that, if there's a meet-up or meet-and-greet organised there, you will receive an e-mail notification. I'm currently managing that group, but it will likely be handed over to a local host once things get going. The more people we can get to sign up to the group beforehand, the more likely that we'll be able to get things off the ground quicker from the very first meet-up.

Heck, if enough sign up, say 30 or so, the whole Durban meet-up may just bootstrap itself!

Nice one Riaan. Impressive
