I'm looking to build a document mangement system that will hold ~5000 files amounting to about 80GB of storage. Has anyone got any recommendations for a suitable approach using Drupal?
Currently I've tried a few things...
-
The document module, https://drupal.org/project/document
This doesn't appear to offer you much more than doing it yourself -
Filedepot. https://drupal.org/project/filedepot
This seems OK but you only get permission control on a folder level. Basically it works with folders being nodes and files (documents) being attached to folders. The files (documents) themselves are not attached to individual nodes. It is simple to use though. -
Use some thing like Alfresco. I installed Alfresco on a Vbox and it all worked but It felt like I had something like Sharepoint to work with. It seems a big step up from a Drupal only solution
Any experiences or suggestions most welcome
Thanks
Tim

Me too
Hi Tim,
No direct suggestions as I am currently in exactly the same position, but saw this post and thought I would jump in to share any discoveries.
Currently I am still getting proper requirements from my client but so far filedepot looks like one of the better candidates, possibly patched or forked to change to my needs.
I have used Alfreso fairly extensively a few years years ago both with Java based projects and it is a fair beast and (used to at least) has a bit of a learning curve, unless it has changed will also probably need a few more resources than Solr, but may be worth a look if you have a need for Solr and a place to run Java already.
Running Java bulks up the system requirements and know how significantly unfortunately.
Alfresco in the cloud http://www.alfresco.com/products/cloud looks appealing if my requirements and budget can stretch to it.
I can comment on Drupal modules to integrate with Alfreso yet (I think they just use a standard document management API now) but I am chasing someone who uses that approach for feedback.
Alfresco as a solution
I'm hoping that filedepot will work out for this situation however Alfresco does look like it's evolved since i last tried it.
Check out these fairly new modules ...

Hopefully see you tonight at the Llandoger
If you do look at Alfresco
It supports the CMIS standard for integration http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Content_Management_Interoperability_Services
Other document management systems will support CMIS as well so you may have a few alternatives if you want to avoid running a Java stack.
There is a community module that provides CMIS support https://drupal.org/project/cmis feature wise it's certainly improved compared to when we first looked at it a few years ago.
or have a look at Apache Chemistry http://chemistry.apache.org/ which provides CMIS client libraries for several languages including PHP.
A Good Solution for Document Management
I would like to share with you about RicohDocs - fully customizable document management system. You can use it on your own server on can also on Ricoh Cloud for more storage space and better performance.
You can check the website ricohdocs.com for more details and reviews.
I personally recommend to go for RicohDocs rather than investing on to develop a new one.

Are you employed by Ricoh?

Not so
I'm just suggesting a good option for a document management system and I don't think so that If you are running a sugar mill and some body ask you in general from where he/she may buy sugar for making sweets and you are not telling him/her about your mill.
Hope you got your answer. :-)
Be Positive... :-)
