Website Ideas for DrupalSouth Wellington 2014

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

I know there already is a website for the event at:
http://wellington2014.drupalsouth.net.nz/

but it's never too early to begin thinking about the design, timing, branding, and releases of the site to make the site as effective as possible for bringing people over here.

Here is an article that makes many recommendations for DrupalCon site success:
http://deeson-online.co.uk/blog/secret-our-drupalcon-site-successes

For example:

It's all about… timing: The overarching pressure is the conference deadline. This is fixed and if you crash it, well, you're in trouble. And so is the conference… Now while that makes the DrupalCon site build pretty intense, it also forces you to be focused, which is why planning is so important.

Anybody else have thoughts on the website? Is anybody taking initiative on the overall http://wellington2014.drupalsouth.net.nz/ website plan?

Willing to sponsor and develop site/some ideas

3cord's picture

Hi,

I'm willing to provide some form of sponsorship and setup, configuration and hosting of the site if this is required.

Some thoughts I have around the approach is:
1./ Committee/Sponsorship
-Setup a committee to be responsible for the event (if not already done) and agree on an approach
-Define roles and responsibilities (can be a mix of vendors, devs and end users.
-Have a chair who is either a business user of Drupal or non-sponsor who doesn't have any self interest /conflict
-Get key sponsorship on board/committed
-Dish out some responsibilities within committee
-Venue? sorted yet?
-Key note speakers

2./ Ticket management
-Pricing/dates for different stages/sponsorship

3./ Website
--My understanding is that past conferences have sometimes used a pre-existing Drupal Installation Profile called "Events" or similar.
-Work out design - committee member responsible
-Bios
-Speakers
-Profiles

4./ Advertising
-Where to advertise? e.g. Drupal Groups, other people's websites, posters etc etc.

These are just random ideas I can think off the top of my head, without having attended a drupal conference yet or organised.

AFAIK...

Josh and Katie have been hashing lots of this out together over on a trello board ... which doesn't seem to be public, but drop Josh a note with your Trello (or gmail) id and you can get in.

He put the word out at the meetup and quietly on http://www.meetup.com/Wellington-Drupal-Meetup/messages/boards/thread/33...

So far
* the first plan was to look at using the Official Acquia COD distro http://usecod.com/ - and I set up a copy, had a look at it and could host. But the reports from Aus was apparently that the D7 version was hard to use, and it looks like some assembly would be required. Instead, the guys have organized for a copy of the Aus one is being made available on 'Pantheon' and the new plan is to gut its content and remake inside that shell.

I'm not on the organizing side of things, I just volunteered logistics or build assistance earlier, but with the hosting and build somewhere on Pantheon instead, I'm not involved there no more.
All the rest of Bens questions should be on the Trello board or Josh can let us know. Drop Josh a mail and get on the board.

If the "reports from Aus" are

If the "reports from Aus" are in relation to the DrupalCon Sydney website, that information is almost 2 years old. Both Acquia and the Drupal Assocation (for DrupalCon) has invested heavily in COD since then.

I would suggest trying COD first—or at least getting more up to date reports on it's quality and maturity.

Sponsorship
