Best Practice for Creating Users with Drupal/CiviCRM?

Hey guys,

I wish I had seen the Philly meetup before today! I've just started playing around with Drupal and CiviCRM, so this is probably a pretty newbie question...my apologies in advance.

Here's the basic use case for what I'm trying to do:
Goal: We're setting up a website to organize grassroots supporters for Barack Obama in Philadelphia. We want a site where interested volunteers can go and sign up. From there, neighborhood leaders can search and find volunteers with the right skill sets to get in touch with for various activities.

Here's a situation where I'm not quite sure the best way to do it. Right now, we're playing with Drupal/CiviCRM on CivicSpace.
1. Interested volunteers visit the website
2. Potential volunteers can sign up to get more information and register in our volunteer repository
3. As part of the process, volunteers need to fill out a "skill survey"

What's the best practice for creating the sign up form?

Right now, I've set up a custom data set for volunteer skills and attached it to CiviCRM's Individual Supporters, so we can add the volunteer skills there. But, I'm not sure the best way to set this up so interested people can sign up with out an Admin creating a supporter. Are profiles in Drupal the best way to do this?

If anyone has any thoughts on pointers on the topic, it would be greatly appreciated!

I'm looking forward to the April meeting.

Regards,
Jonathan

jon,

i haven't delved into the whole crm thing yet - so i honestly wish i could help you but cant get a picture on a workflow for you - i know Nate gasser in tis group uses that type of functionality and he could probably help..

jamie

I don't have any experience with CiviCRM, but I know that when I want to get certain information from users as they register on a Drupal-powered website, I use the profile module to set up the questions that I ask.

If the other modules you want to use support interacting with profile, then you're all set!
