They need a document repository on a Windows business server, authenticated through LDAP, etc. But it needs a nice intranet front end, which is where the Drupalness comes in.

I just sent u a quick email from my hone, but windows business server (2012 or SBS?0 best practice would be a sharepoint install. even better would be migrating them to office 365 - we are microsoft and Telstra partners and can do this. happy to talk further later this afternoon -

They have 600G of documents
They have 600G of documents so migrating to office 365 would be pretty mammoth, windows small business server 2008 and they have a license for sharepoint but aren't using it.
I'm in the office all afternoon, the 1300 number on our site will get me if you want to call at your convenience.
Clarification on Front end
Hi, just like to clarify a few details.
Is the Drupal front end an interface for searching & accessing the documents, or a front end CMS that happens to have links to the document repository?
In terms of authentication, do you want full blown SSO (doable, but slightly more work), or just manual username/password authentication against LDAP?
Finally, are you wanting the Drupal install on the same OS as the document store (ie; Windows), or would you prefer to go with separate server or VM, as Drupal is generally happier on a Linux/*nix OS.

Alfresco + CMIS
A common OSS solution is Alfresco & CMIS - https://drupal.org/project/cmis.
Alfresco has support for LDAP.
I understand Acquia are working something similar for media management - https://www.acquia.com/sites/default/files/collateral/20130103-ds-acquia...
Not sure about their "document" suport though.
Has anyone used Acquia media drive before?

EKM: the brief was just that their current system is slow, manual and clunky so my first thought was a Drupal site that acts as a sort of cache of their document repository and only hits their server when someone clicks through. I don't see why they wouldn't be open to a search solution too, with that many documents. Which I'm guessing is going to lead to a separate SOLR server, someone did a talk on this at the Sydney Drupalcon.
LDAP was the only authentication mentioned. Their offices are distributed, some in Sydney, some in Brisbane.
They seem pretty open about hosting, they're a private SME not government so not quite so constrained. We're having another meeting with their IT guy next week when my supreme overlord (who will be the one approving any costs for external consultants) comes back from an OS holiday.
Client conveniently failed to mention any of this when we quoted for their external site rebuild/refresh.
