Christmas meal

We encourage users to post events happening in the community to the community events group on https://www.drupal.org.
Joe Vallender's picture

Since Chris has been sorting everything recently, I said I'd organise the christmas meal, providing there is enough interest.

Last year at the Urban Wood - with drinks before and after and zero degrees and the gryphon, respectively - was a resounding success, if I do (as the organiser) say so myself.

Anyway. Who is up for this? Suggestions for venue? Gotta be really cheap? Dont care? Can only come for a drink before/after? Dates?

The most important question is: are you interested? Then I'll have a think about where can accommodate us.

As one suggestion. I had a great meal at Poco (opposite the Canteen, stokes croft) last weekend with good wine, nice cocktails... and noticed they were still advertising having space for christmas bookings. Probably midweek, but I'd guess that's probably best for everyone's availability anyway. Good pre/post drink locations and pretty near the centre. Just an idea....

Feel free to come along even if you haven't attended a meeting before. We had at least 2 people who came for the first time last year and it couldn't have been a better environment for getting to know everyone

Please reply so I can guauge interest. Ta

Ideally mid-week

Mid-week works for me, put me down as a strong probably :-)
Any date up until the 20th works for me.

I'm thinking december before 20th. will refine as people let me know what works for them

Also Friday the 13th is the Sift christmas do, so that narrows down the dates for me!

Joe Vallender's picture

i got a reply from poco who still have midweek spaces for the week we want for up to about 20 people if we book soon. im just waiting on an example menu (it was one of those 'please find attached..' emails thats missing the attachment) but it sounds like there is a mix of food and its 16 quid a head which is definitely not more than a starter and main most places.

im going to progress with that for now, post the menu up when i get it then pick a date if we like it.

sound okay to everyone? its here https://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=Poco+Bristol&fb=1&gl=uk&hq=poco&hnear=0... pretty central IMO. but station is 5 mins max

will need to get more definite numbers as it progresses

im told they serve a mixture of things from the hot/cold tapas and some from the seasonal dishes. so theres a bit of chicken/brusselsy xmas stuff and a bit of loveyl fatty pork belly... and a reasonable number of veggie things IMO.

i doubt anyone is going to be over full after something like that (if you wanna be absolutely stuffed, thats probably a point against this venue) but i reckon it will be tasty, and its a nice place to be.

anyways. on top of the 13 listed, seems we have another 5 yes from tim, matt, any, rich and mike.

I might have to just crack on and book this. I'll book for 20 later today, with the aim of booking on 12th (thursday) if available, or the 11th or 10th if not. then we'll see what happens with the maybes and any drop outs.

i think the main thing for me is to find out ASAP if we're expecting more than 20 (or 22 or whatever, im sure theyd squeeze a couple more in on the day) as then i'd have to look somewhere else. i actually think a 25+ table anywhere decent is going to be harder and harder to get now... we'd end up in some chain italian of some shite like that.

let me know. cheers

I'd previously been talking to the lady about between 10-20 people coming. I've asked how many more than 20 we can do and she said a couple more would already be a squeeze. We'll be on an L-shaped table due to the size of the venue, but still all seated together.

There are a handful of bar type tables at the front of the restaurant if anyone decided really last minute to come and couldn't squeeze in.

Have we got three veggies at the moment? Rosie, Matt and Chris Dolby? Anyone else? I'd like to specify how many when confirming the booking to make sure they get enough of the non-humous things.

When I confirm this booking I'll have to put the money down for half the attendees' food up front, then theyd like the set meal food cost paid as we arrive (maybe they've had few dodgy parties in recently). I'll work out how we sort this later. I bet everyone has online banking, it might be the easiest thing to transfer me the money the week before we go and ill pay it off in one, then we only need cash for drinks etc. on the day.

Time to look forward to it now :)

Payment

mint5auce's picture

Great stuff Joe - thanks.

I've used Eventbrite to organise and take payment for just this sort of thing in the past - eases the "who has, who hasn't" problems. Might be worth a punt?

(2.5% + 65p) + (3.5%) per

Joe Vallender's picture

(2.5% + 65p) + (3.5%) per booking.
https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/fees/

they give the example of some cooking teacher who increases the cost on and increases her course cost from 50 quid to 53.65....

if everyone wants to pay 17.61 instead of 16 quid for my convenience, thats fine by me?? :-)

Doesn't bother me..

alternatively drop a note here and ill send you my bank details. just didnt want to put them online here.

i imagine as we get closer, and a few people realise they are double booked and dont send the cash we'll have a few drop outs anyway

Can't come :(

dddbbb's picture

I still can't really confirm either way at the mo so I'm just gonna say I can't come to keep it simple for you guys. December is looking crazier than I'd like already so it's probably the smart play.

Have fun though! Have an egg-nog for me.

all sorted

Joe Vallender's picture

thanks to everyone for sorting out money so readily. made this pretty painless. just sent them money for the final booking of 24.

also

  • they put 10% service on tables of 8+ which we definitely are, so have a couple of quid spare to leave as a tip (provided it's not shit of course)
  • try and bring cash for settling the drinks bill if you can, 24 card payments will take forever

and

its at 7, which isn't time for going home and back out for most people - so any ideas on somewhere for a drink first? i'd suggest

  • the bell
  • hare on the hill
  • hillgrove

that type of thing. although can always go somewhere big like 51
