What is the status?

We encourage users to post events happening in the community to the community events group on https://www.drupal.org.

I'd be interested in a compiled document "bullet-pointing" status on Drupal accessibilities. What standards does it adhere to - how much? What remains to be done to make Drupal and whatever theme fully accessible according to this and that standard?

Would that be a good starting point?
Does it exist yet?

There isn’t anything at

vigo's picture

There isn't anything at the moment, but that's certainly something we should look at doing. It would need to be in two parts:
a) drupal core,
b) theme-specific.

As an example of inaccessible code in drupal core take a look at a screenreader user's comments on collapsable blocks.

Handbook

Robert Castelo's picture

I added this to the handbook a few months ago:

Accessibility
http://drupal.org/node/44661

I've only tested the standard content type pages, we should also test all the other types of pages with each of the core themes (big job).
Unfortunately the page, and the rest of drupal.org fails Section 508 compliance - doh!

That link is broken

But there is an updated list of documentation here that came out of the doc sprint at DrupalCon - http://groups.drupal.org/node/19829

Most of the information on the old site was geared towards 4.x, so not relevant to many now.

Hi,
Drupal is used by non-profits in the US enough that I think Section 508 accessibility compliance would be a big concern. It's also cool to see how people can make a big difference when they can do their work regardless of which senses they use so laws or not, it's a great idea.

Both Federal and many state laws require this kind of thing for organizations working with government, and I am definitely interested in helping address it in simple (screen reader compatibility, for instance) or more advanced (embedded audio, image tags, etc.) ways.

Drupal Evaluation again

Mario Batusic's picture

Hello there!

I am quite new in Drupal compaired with many - some two years now. And I joined this group yesterday. I planed it long, but ...
So is there any structured, documet-like Drupal accessibility evaluation accordint to any guidelines? I need a suggestion.
In the next term I could put my students in the Web Accessibility course to make some work in this direction.

Broken Links & Future Work

mgifford's picture

Hello,

Wanted to say that Robert Castelo's post is broken, but his accessibility link can still be found on Archive.org.

The closest comparable thing I know for Drupal 6 Themes is my analysis here:
http://openconcept.ca/blog/mgifford/function_assessment_of_valid_drupal_...

As far as students go, I'd love to have a bunch of folks do a WCAG 2.0 assessment and edit this wiki:
http://groups.drupal.org/node/18595

Really do need to know where are the weaknesses according to this still very new standard.

"Accessibility and Drupal" as an overview document 394094 is on the doc issue queue to be posted in the handbook.

Doc Sprint Looks Great!

Sorry I wasn't able to stay later to join in. I like the summary that you did here:
http://drupal.org/node/394094

I couldn't find a valid reference to LIFT though, closest I could find was - http://www.usablenet.com/usablenet_assistive.html

Links

johnbarclay's picture

I almost want to move that pile of links to a separate page or better yet link to accessibility.gov or webaim for the list of resources. It just seems like we should focus on drupal specific stuff in the documenation. I ran across your theme reviews/tests. That is very useful.

Finding the right balance

mgifford's picture

We definitely don't want to overwhelm people, at the same time there is so much out there that if we could point to a few critical resources to introduce people to the issue I think it could be useful.

I'm not one of the original authors of this document though so perhaps there are some thoughts from those participating in the sprint itself. Any feedback on how this is going to be incorporated into Drupal's handbook at some point?

Handbook placement

k8's picture

Right before leaving the Doc sprint, Addison told me to enter a Docs issue for where to place this in the handbook:
http://drupal.org/node/394664

I like the feel of the page now which John has handled most of. I had gathered the list of references since I didn't find anywhere else that collected them all. I agree perhaps that the handbook is of course to be Drupal-centric, but I do think that maintaining a list of authoritative resources would be ok to do here, showing all that the body of knowledge being applied to Drupal is current and only a click away. Thoughts?

I agree. Maybe more context to the links.

johnbarclay's picture

If a good list isn't available elsewhere I think its good to have it. To make the list more user friendly, perhaps:
a little more info with the links; put the most appropriate ones for people new to the topic at the top; and link to the content appropriate to the section rather than homepages. I tried to do this with the Best Practices section to demonstrate what I was thinking. http://drupal.org/node/394094

Mike, your list of accessible themes rocks!

Cliff's picture

Mike, I hadn't seen the your list of 11 D6 themes that pass accessibility evaluations before.

That's a very significant resource, and I'm glad it's linked to from the sprint summary. It's neat that you also identify the failures of a number of themes that don't pass.

Thanks

mgifford's picture

Since then I think peterx has been doing a better job of demoing themes and providing detailed descriptions of ways to enhance contributed drupal themes. His d-theme site provides both a page in the theme, but an analysis of how it can be improved, see this one for Superclean.

The more basic list of those themes that do validate was used as the starting point for the accessibility post.
