User group meeting

We will be hosted by the MIT Drupal Group in Cambridge in Building E51 - Tang Center (mapquest) in room E51-149 . Thanks again to Ed Carlevale for hosting us and to Susan MacPhee for securing this space.

Parking and Transportation:
After 3pm, there is an unattended MIT lot folks can use. It is Hayward Lot http://whereis.mit.edu/map-jpg?selection=P5&Parking=go

Lightning Talks

Everyone is welcome and encouraged to present for 10 minutes on a topic of their choosing. You may show off your Drupal site, ask some questions of the audience, give a module demonstration, share some marketing ideas for Drupal, and so on. Just keep it brief. No expertise or planning required - just do it.

Dinner

After the meetup, some of us will continue the conversation over dinner at MIT's Muddy Charles Pub. We will likely pre-order some pizza or burritos so they meets us there.

Transportation

Any idea how to get back to Waltham after the meeting? The buses stop at 6:45.

re: Transportation

Get on the T at Kendall and take the Red Line outbound one stop to Central Square. Then take bus 70 to Waltham. See the route on Google Maps.

Not quite

There may be a bus or two that will get me to Waltham Central Square, but my hotel is about 5 miles from there and this is not a good time of the year to walk (especially if I wear heels that day).

Well, since I can't find a way to work out the transportation issue, I guess I can't make it. I was so wanting to actually meet Moshe too.

Nancy, I leave in Newton,

Comparing Drupal with Elgg

wenda tai's picture

Someone at MIT Media Lab suggests I come here for advice/info. I'm not a developer nor programmer, just an educated end-user of web sites, looking for an honest comparison of CMS platforms, specifically Elgg vs. Drupal. I've heard that integrating third-party apps and collaborating/communicating with third parties is easier with Elgg. I want to get a Drupal perspective on this. Getting the right CMS platform that plays well with 3rd party apps (including proprietary software) has serious long-term implication for my work plan. So I appreciate any objective feedback from anyone. I plan to be at the Meetup on Jan. 5 and be glad to get the feedback there. Or you can email me directly at wenda.tai@gmail.com.

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the group

Hi Wendy,

The format of our meetups is 10-minute lighting talks one after other. Your question is perfect for this format and I'm sure you will find most of your questions answered by the lively group.

Cheers, Susan

Do you need to sign up to present? I'd like to do a "lightning talk" on the drupal site for my podcast, http://champsnotchumps.org.

Hi Tom,

Volunteer presenter names go up on the board at beginning of event, usually after a brief introduction of all meetup attendees. I'm sure everyone will enjoy learning about champsnotchumps.org.

My personal request is to learn a little about your approach using the Zen and Keep it Clean themes.

Welcome! Susan

Thread on building a framework which would make modules work on any version of Drupal:

Fixed!

It was great to see so many faces I only knew from the group site. Sorry for the noise with my broken site. I just fixed it. The culprit was automated_logout module I forgot that I updated with 6.15 core. I rolled it back a version and the site came back without the OG fatal error you saw.

A few of you asked my performance schedule. We had a very busy season until Christmas but Jan/Feb are usually slow.

This was my first Drupal site with many regrets. Not nearly nice as what I saw tonight from others. Ha-ha.

Thanks & Volunteers

Thanks again to everyone who offered in ideas for my laundromat calendaring-from-hell! It was really helpful, and the lightning talks were, as always, inspiring. Just wish I could've made the Muddy Charles ... Hopefully next month.

And once again, my sales pitch: If anyone's interested, http://SpareChangeNews.net is looking for Drupal volunteers of all persuasions. It's a non-profit that directly helps homeless individuals with self-employment, and it's a mission I really believe in. Just let me know if you're interested (morisy at gmail works best).
