I have noticed the same thing, people in sydney never meetup. We so should have a sydney meetup.

You guys need to check out the Sydney group. You'll find info about Sydney meet-ups there.
I really wish the Sydney
I really wish the Sydney group didn't exists for the same reasons that I keep vetoing the Melbourne group.
The Australia Group traffic is not that large, and this way if people want to travel they will know that these are on.
From the experience of the Melbourne meetups, the best method is to find a good place to just add an announcement. The rest will take care of itself.
People will just start turning up, and if you make it a regular thing like the Melbourne 1 is every second tuesday then it makes it easy for everyone.
