Domain Access with Drupal Installed as a Sub-Directory. Does it work? Can it work?

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

I have investigated Drupal and multisite capabilities through numerous sources and experienced users of Drupal. At all turns, I am told Domain Access is the module we need to use to meet our needs.

Our needs are basically this:

(1) we want a single code install of Drupal (don't have the resources to keep multiple copies up-to-date and in sync with each other)
(2) we have shared server running nearly 100 websites and web apps of varying sizes and complexities
(3) some of the ~100 sites will get converted into Drupal for better CMS capabilities
(4) the remainder of the ~100 sites we stay as is -- mature sites requiring very little maintenance and attention
(5) going forward we want single source information so it can be shared and syndicated across many of our sites -- we are a large enterprise that has a great deal of commonality across our sites so we want content owners to manage and maintain their information and data yet allow for realtime sharing of that information and data -- thus a single database

I have installed Drupal as a sub-directory off the web root so as not to disrupt the current production sites running on our server.

I cannot get Drupal to recognize the first domain I have setup. I get 404 Page Not Found errors when trying to edit within Drupal.

See my Domain Access Issue post (http://drupal.org/node/671104)

Basically, I need to know if Drupal has a workable multisite capability.

I've replied to your issue. It may be tough to determine just what the problems you're having are, but I can attest that Domain Access should be able to do what you're looking for.

But how? Currently it's not

But how? Currently it's not working. Everyone says "it can" but no one has been able to show me how or prove that it does.

Fifteen sites, one Domain Access-powered Drupal installation.

I'm sorry that you're having trouble and understand it can be frustrating, and we'll try to help you with that, but getting upset and insisting that it must not work for everyone just because it's not working for you is not going to get you very far, and frankly it's the easy way out. Please accept that Domain Access does, in general, work; then we can move on to getting it working in your case in particular.

Been at this since beginning

Been at this since beginning of October. Sorry, but I am not accustomed to 3 month's of spinning wheels, but I am learning to be more patient -- it' going to be my 2010 resolution ;)

As for the sites listed above, that's nice but have they all installed Drupal in a sub-dir off the main web host?

No. The server hosts Drupal

No. The server hosts Drupal and Drupal only, as far as I am aware.

Ah, so maybe you can't

Ah, so maybe you can't install Drupal in a sub-directory and get it to work with Domain Access. People in the community have responded to my posts stating you can, but maybe they were merely making an assumption.

I have been working with a

I have been working with a colleague of mine from a sister-branch within our organization on this issue for the past few days as well as attempting to get help from the Drupal community over the past few months. My colleague has used Drupal for over 5 years.

We have both reached the same conclusion that Domain Access will not work (easily, if at all) when Drupal is installed as a sub-directory off the web root.

So I am going to create a virtual host designated and reserved as the core Drupal install. I will then attempt to create domains (in D.A.) off the designated virtual host.
