Any good resources for Omega sub-themes?

So, I've finished the Omega training videos, and realize Omega is more of an infrastructure theme than a design theme- so now I'm ready to track down a sub-theme I can use to get an initial design going.

Any good Omega sub-theme resources out there?

so far- Omega KickStart

KickStart is looking pretty good to me at the moment as a good base to build on Only local images are allowed.
Semantic UI Omega also looks pretty nice Only local images are allowed.

Thoughts and additional recommendations welcome...

You're correct, Omega affords great flexibility and best practices exposure BUT, if you don't have an overall look to use, you'll need to find some subthemes you can use.

I don't have any such experience using third-party subthemes but I'll be curious what you find and like to use.

Purchased themes

I have had very good experience buying a couple of responsive themes that through themeforest (http://themeforest.net/). They inevitably require some customization, and sub-theming them is the way to go. One caveat is, they are not typically a plug-and-play solution, but if you know your way around the Drupal theming system, you can get a lot of value for ~$50 in my opinion.

sub theme Omega

Why wouldn't you sub theme the Omega theme? Would it not just be css to create the look? You would only have to install Omega and the sub-theme on the live site, and not sass and compass et al.

I would avoid TF at all cost. There might be good themes there, but TF does not review submitted themes. They have a simple goal: sell as many themes as possible, quality be damned. You're at the random mercy of the developer you're buying code from. It's a recipe for disaster. Look for developers who are active in the Drupal community (Jeff Burnz comes to mind) and thank them by using their themes. Plus you'll get excellent best-practices adherent themes.

since I didn't get any reactions to my mention of the Kickstart Omega subtheme, there's a good chance no one has experience with this particular issue, but...

Does anyone know the difference between Omega Kickstart and Commerce Kickstart? Best I can tell, Commerce Kickstart is a subtheme of Omega Kickstart, but I'm still pretty confused because if I click on Omega Kickstart documentation, I land on the CommerceKickstart page.

(currently pursuing several avenues to answer this question, so I'll post the results)

No personal experience BUT

Check out: http://simplytest.me

You can startup a Drupal sandbox instance that use both themes, so you can check both and get a feel for both of them without installing them locally.

Both "Commerce Kickstart" and "Omega Kickstart" are distributions that are available there.

Great tool! but not sure it can work here

I love it! Bookmarked right away.

But I think perhaps the project is a little too involved for simplytest.me to handle- I installed CommerceKickstarter project and then installed the Omega Kickstarter theme and got a bunch of errors:
Trying to get property of non-object in drupal_alter() (line 1080 of /home/sd54c42d33bb4f96/www/includes/module.inc).

The installation instructions are a little more than installing a module or theme...

According to the

According to the documentation https://www.drupal.org/node/2187023, there are two themes that come with Commerce Kickstart. They are located at profile/commerce kickstart/themes. If you then installed Omega Kickstart again, in site/all/themes could that be the issue?

Commerce Kickstart in SimplyTest.me

Carolina Tiger Rescue's picture

When I use SimplyTest.me to test the Commerce Kickstart project, and then I take a look at themes under Appearance, there are no additional themes displayed.

I can't find anything in the Drupal Administration menu that says profile, and if you mean the folder structure of the site itself- I don't know if there's a way to access that with SimplyTest.me

which version

fchandler's picture

I installed Commerce Kickstart on SimplyTest.me. One would have to pick the correct distribution. The first time I tried it, SimplyTest installed 7x1.something and the other themes were not there.

I did it all again and picked 7x 2.17 from the dropdown list and when it finished I navigated to simplytest.me/#overlay=admin/appearance and the Commerce Kickstart and Omega Kickstart themes are available. To go to the themeing section via the menu, mouse over Site Settings and choose Appearance. I also downloaded the tar ball for Commerce Kickstart from https://www.drupal.org/project/commerce_kickstart and the themes are in there.

Just to make sure you've seen this, the Omega docs are pretty good (assume 4.x):

A sub-theme you generate will give you a starting place that you can edit.
