Join us for second-wednesday #PDXDUG. For those who missed it, we've moved to Phase2's new Portland office at 514 NW 11th Ave, Suite #203. There is some on-street parking nearby, and the office is easily accessed by transit or bike (bike racks outside).

The schedule will be the same: pizza at 6pm (no beer this month, sorry), and talks start around 6:30. This month we have pizza is sponsored by The New Group, and Ryan Aslett (Mixologic) will be talking about content formatting for browsers that we don't always think about (it's not always a human with a mouse).

Also we're opening up the comments on this thread for the post-meetup meetup. We used tp go to Lucky Lab on 19th & Quimby, but we now need something closer, within walking distance from NW 11th & Glisan. If you have a suggestion, please comment here. We'd like to nail down a new location before the meetup night.

I'd lean towards Deschutes

I'd lean towards Deschutes over the Rogue, but that might just be me.

Other options could include Tilt although I think they close too early now or Henry's which I wouldn't really recommend. Not sure what other good places around, and I'm afraid none of them will have the awesome open seating/big tables/good wifi that the Lab had :(

Right! Well, we all just have

Right! Well, we all just have to try a new pub a night in the region and then report back.

Deschutes is very nice but also very busy. Not sure we could game a dinner time table without reservations. Don't know about Rogue myself, but willing to explore.

And there are many pubs in the region, admittedly, mostly sports bars, but since when is coding not a sport?

I'll vote -1 for Rogue

Lucky Lab was nice because 1)

skjalf's picture

Lucky Lab was nice because 1) it was all ages, thus more inclusive, and 2) the counter service was conducive to everyone keeping their own tabs, which is ideal for groups.

Thoughts on tabs and venues: When the DUG used to go to Bridgeport post-meetup, there were a couple times that someone was stuck with a HUGE bar tab at the end. Splitting checks a million ways and running different tabs for a big group that's all sitting together at a table getting wait service is unkind to the servers (if they'll even do it). Having one tab for a big group results in at best a multifaceted math problem and at worst a huge unplanned credit card charge for some poor sap at the end.

Here are close options I can think of besides those already mentioned:

OK, I know McMenamin's beer is not the greatest. But they're all-ages, have wifi (I think?) and are used to dealing with groups.

It's a shame that I can only

It's a shame that I can only +1 this once.

It also made me wonder if we could approach the brewpal idea in a different way and not do this at a pub. Would it be possible for someone (maybe P2 or another company) to host and seed the event with a few 6 packs each month... then people could also bring a 6 pack (of beer or anything else). Sort of a work + beer/beverage potluck. I'm confident that since this community is full of contributors, we won't have a situation where nobody brings beer to share.

Once MT is into the new space

Once MT is into the new space I bet we could host something like this.

Metal Toad would LOVE to host

We'd be thrilled to host! We'll have a 6-tap kegerator in the new place and room for 50+.

To tack onto skjalf's suggestions

Bailey's Taproom has a (not so) secret second story, "Upper Lip", which has larger tables and is not very crowded. You pay up front, it's still 21+, but it's a way better venue than Bailey's (which is extremely hard to find a seat in). There are usually four strong 12ozers on tap, alongside a good selection of bottles.

Tugboat is a favorite of mine, although its "charm" doesn't always rub people the right way. It's basically a friendly neighborhood pub with a decent, mostly unchanging tap list and great microwaved nachos (no, that isn't an oxymoron). It kind of feels like your cool brewer friend's basement.

From experience, Deschutes is expensive, busy, and would require a lot of check-wrangling. I've also never seen a meetup-like group in there, or at the very least never seen a group of people with laptops out. The servers might not take kindly to that.

I don't think Rouge has enough seating, but I have nothing else bad to say about them.

McMenamins, as always, is the choice that no one really wants but will probably work for everyone.

Keep the votes coming in,

Keep the votes coming in, I'll tally em up in the morninng. ALSO: we really need a projector this month. Next month we'll be all geared up, but tomorrow, we not. If anyone can supply a projector, I can give you a PRIZE.
