New builds & distributions

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

Hi all,

It's been about 18 months since I've done anything in Drupal, and I'm sure there have been a heap of developments since I last installed a site.

I need to make a couple of really small (1 - 3 page), easy to maintain websites and am wondering if anyone has recommendations for any awesome new install packages, distributions or other things to make my life easy. At the moment I have some quickly hacked together HTML sites, but I want to convert them to something that's easier to edit and has better SEO and nicer looking URLs. I'm also open to non-Drupal solutions if there are any new cool things out there you've heard of or tried.

Cheers,
Erica.

Static's best for tiny sites

If the sites are really simple, you're most likely best off avoiding a dynamic web app altogether.

Use bootstrap or a similar framework to knock up a great looking static HTML site.

Pros:

  • You can host it for basically nothing, through amazon s3, github or similar.
  • Simple content editing in via HTML in the text editor of your choice. use git for version control.
  • No need to worry about drupalgeddon-esque security issues.
  • No regular updates of code, server software etc.
  • Scales incredibly well without having to worry about performance optimisation.
  • Quick biuld

Cons:

  • No WYSIWYG editor.
  • No dynamic features, unless you use 3rd party plugins.

That's my 2c. Unless you specifically need something that drupal offers, it's best avoided.

Thanks tripper54, I agree on

Thanks tripper54,

I agree on the HTML pros, and at the moment it's looking like the best option. The sites are for clients and most of them have an events feed that will be regularly updated. I don't particularly want to be updating their HTML pages constantly, but with a good git workflow the time spent doing that will definitely be less than the time spent setting up and maintaining Drupal installs. Something to think about for sure. Perhaps just giving them a special email address to send content updates to would make it feel more like a system, and not like them hassling me to update their website all the time.

I was working on an install profile for these kinds of small sites ages ago, but I lost steam when I went back to study and it's only half done and very out of date now. I wish I'd finished it!

Maybe something like

Seems like wordpress would be a good choice for

Many drupal companies use it for similar cases.

Welcome back Erica!

I suppose you've considered and rejected DrupalGardens for this?

Drupal does seem like overkill for little sites these days, which kind of makes me sad - but that's a conversation for another day.

I haven't used it, so can't recommend it from experience, but have heard people say they've been playing with Wix. Might be worth a look.

PS. Or you know, you could finish your install profile, and come and talk about it at DrupalSouth ;)
