Where will DrupalSouth 2016 be?

We encourage users to post events happening in the community to the community events group on https://www.drupal.org.

Since the original DrupalSouth Christchurch 2008, Drupal communities in Australia and New Zealand have organised major Drupal events with attendees numbering in the hundreds and international speakers for six consecutive summers:

  • DrupalSouth Wellington 2010
  • Drupal DownUnder Brisbane 2011
  • Drupal DownUnder Melbourne 2012
  • DrupalCon Sydney 2013
  • DrupalSouth Wellington 2014
  • DrupalSouth Melbourne 2015
  • DrupalSouth ... 2016?

DrupalSouth Melbourne 2015 is just around the corner this coming March. It has become a tradition to announce the next event at the closing ceremony of the previous event. Which is a good thing because it takes a year of planning to organise a good Drupal conference!

Where will DrupalSouth 2016 be?

That is up to you, the Drupal community!

Each DrupalSouth is organised by a team of dedicated individuals from the community, led by a committed individual (or small group) with a wide range of skills:

  • Leadership skills to organise volunteers, gather consensus, and know when to just make the decision
  • Business skills to deal with event management companies, venues, sponsors, contracts and manage risk
  • Organisational skills to make sure everything gets done, and have a backup plan for when it does not
  • Financial skills to not be bankrupt by the end of it

Lead organisers also need a large amount of time. About 10% of your time for the first 9 months, 30% of your time in the next 2 months, 50% of your time in the final month and 100% in the week of the event.

Are you ready?

If you want to volunteer to organise DrupalSouth 2016 (and you know you've got what it takes) you can express your interest or share ideas and plans by commenting here or with drupalsouth@googlegroups.com.

About the process

There is no official process for selection yet. Traditionally, willing volunteers for the next event have spoken with current organisers. With our local events growing year on year though, it is time to put more transparency and more process in place.

Submissions will be reviewed by current and past DrupalSouth organisers and evaluated based on how likely we think they are to be successful. This is the first time an open call for organisers has been made. We are open to ideas and suggestions about the process.

Please refrain from replying with location and venue suggestions. Such suggestions are only useful if they are backed up by someone willing and able to organise it. Thank you.

the last one I've been to is Christchurch in 2008!! wooowww is that ages ago!! I'd love to rock on up in 2016 in AUCKLAND!

It's better to light a candle, than to curse the darkness

Good initiative

I think this is a great idea. Allowing submissions from the community is a great way to encourage participation. Having the old hands there to steer the way will help ensure continuity and quality. This initiative is to be applauded and I encourage those interested to step and and become involved.

Auckland for 2016? Or somewhere else?

kattekrab's picture

Auckland would be awesome! Might a bunch of Auckland Drupallers be willing to band together to organise it? I'm in Auckland this week for linux.conf.au - could definitely squeeze in a chat on what's involved.

As we dive deep into final prep for DrupalSouth in Melbourne we really need to think about where and what next. I'd be happy to chat to anyone from anywhere who'd be willing to take the baton.

cheers

Any further thoughts?

DrupalSouth Melbourne is on next week - and it's usual to announce next year's venue.

There's been some suggestions, but no offers to actually run it yet.

Everyone (YAY Josh, YAY

Everyone (YAY Josh, YAY Bevan, Yay - was it Dave Lane+crew?) who've done the Kiwi DrupalSouth before now has sworn "never again" I think.
Not that any of them were bad experiences, but it's probably true that they are all a lot more work than anyone expected going in.

Drupal Meetups WLG etc are all sorta hoping and hinting that it's Aucklands turn, but we haven't found anyone to pick up that hot potato and run with it.
Sponsors exist, and can be found, but we need an AKL-based lynchpin (or three) to really make this happen.

Not to set too high a bar on this but .... Looking for volunteers/victims !?

RELATED: I was saying earlier today, Asia has been woefully under-represented. I'd be (more than) happy with Singapore, Malaysia, Japan or freaking anywhere S.E. Asia or S. Pacific happening.

I think Auckland is the

I think Auckland is the logical choice. I'd also be inclined to consider having a permanent DrupalSouth organising team made up of people on this list rather than waiting for a local to put their hand up to volunteer. We've all got the experience, and can easily delegate out responsibilities to ease the load. We can also open up the group to new volunteers. Just a thought!

Possible alternative

Donna,
Anand is overseas but he will contact you regarding alternative location.

Second for SE asia

fionamccaskill's picture

I second Dman suggestion about SE asia. I'm currently volunteering in Lombok, Indonesia setting up a Drupal website at University of Mataram. My counterpart would love to go to a Drupal conference but travelling to Australia is too expensive.

In Lombok I know there are heaps of great conference venues with really good prices and facilities. Lombok is also a great holiday destination, with beautiful beaches and surfing, cheap food and drink and good night life.

I understand logistically it could be difficult to organise but just putting my two cents in for people in Indonesia who would greatly benefit from getting access to this resource!
