General update - what's up folks?

We encourage users to post events happening in the community to the community events group on https://www.drupal.org.

Hi everyone,

Not as much general activity here in GDO/aus these days, so thought it might be good to get a bit of an update out there on what's going on about the place...

There was a camp in Byron bay last month, one planned for Sydney in a couple of weeks I believe, and I've heard a compelling rumour that something is afoot in Melbourne for late in the year.

Regular meetups happening around the place, and some new players popping up around the place.

Are we all flat out busy?

Have people started building with Drupal8?

Anyone heading to Drupalcon Barcelona? (I am!)

Wassup people? Let's chat :)

Those of you organising events and meetups - perhaps give us an update on plans and where to find more info?

Hi Kattekrab, Flat-out busy

darvanen's picture

Hi Kattekrab,

Flat-out busy just about describes it. I'm getting an email from a recruiter about once a fortnight which is making me think I should go into contracting.

Seems like there's plenty of jobs out there, and the recruiters are asking for leads so if anyone's interested I can pass on a few details (best to contact through private message, don't want to derail this thread).

Every fortnight sounds about right

I think a lot of us ran out of Drupal dev contacts available for work a long time ago.

Drupal Shenanigans

VladimirAus's picture

Hi, Donna.

Yep, first DrupalCamp Byron Bay happened late July and was quite a success. Big thanks to Acquia and Technocrat for making camp a free event. I'm already thinking about putting Byron Bay camp 2016.

Some behind the scenes work is happening for DrupalSouth but nothing I can announce yet.

We are building Drupal 8 website at Technocrat at the moment so there is been lots of ups and downs with that, but hopefully we will see it going live early September.

I will be in Europe in September but I'm taking 2 month off Drupal so wont be making it to conference.
I might see you at Melbourne DrupalCamp.

Cheers

Changing pace a bit

RumpledElf's picture

I just stopped working full time on Drupal with the intention of having a bit of a break (which I went and spent painting a large house, nice change from sitting at a computer) and will be contracting but I want to avoid back-to-back contracting. There's more than enough work out there to do it, but my mental health does not appreciate never having any time off. Those recruiters don't quite seem to comprehend that people might not want to start a new contract the day after an old one finishes and are very persistent. And the pay rates for contracts are getting quite high.

I shall see a bunch of you at the Sydney camp I'm sure :)

DrupalGlamp Sydney just 10 days away

murrayw's picture

Hi Donna - nice thread.

DrupalGlamp Sydney is shaping up quite nicely. We now have a full programme over both days, with lots in store for people interested in Drupal 8, govCMS, frontend, dev ops, security and project management.
https://signup.zone/zEEj2CyTpGive6mdP

Kim and Magda will be presenting 4 hours of hands on labs where participants will learn to make a D8 module and theme. This is a great chance for frontend and backend devs to learn more about D8 from people with deep expertise in the area.

We have also been really lucky with a host of sponsors who have come on board, ensuring that the event will be financially stable. Big thanks to the two gold sponsors PreviousNext and Catalyst, both of which were quick to support the event. Shout outs to our silver sponsors as well: Morpht, Acquia, Infinity, Linux Australia, Demonz and This Little Duck. We now have wifi covered (yay) and may even have a few dollars over to shout everyone a drink on Saturday night.

The event is 10 days away - we still have a few tickets left. If you haven't got yours yet, please head on over to Eventbrite:
https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/drupalglamp-sydney-2015-tickets-17119185946

Not convinced? A few other points of note:
- Students (and otherwise hard off) off have access to discounted tickets at $10
- The venue is pretty cool, to say the least, with camping available on the Saturday night
- Catered lunch, with views of the harbour
- A firepit on Saturday night for chilling out
- Plenty of helpful Drupal folk to answer your questions

OK... enough spiel already :) Hoping to see you there.

Drupal Gold Coast

jaymiejones86's picture

Hi Donna and the rest of the peoples

Drupal Gold Coast has been going well, although attendance has wained a bit. Quite up and down.
We are looking to do hack days/nights here and there. Has anyone else been doing this?

Myself personally I have been flat out like a lizard drinking... had to get that saying in there.
Lots and lots of work, minimal Drupal for me though, just maintenance and minor adjustments.
A bit of playing around with Drupal 8.

I have also been winding down my client work to work on some personal projects more, but of course as soon as I say that clients come in left right and centre. Can't complain though can I.

I missed Drupal Camp Byron Bay due to family commitments but heard it went down well. Good job Vlad!
Hoping to work on some things with Vlad for DrupalSouth.

DC Barcelona

8thom's picture

Looking forward to DC Barcelona, only ~3 weeks away!

If anyone is keen to start playing around with Drupal 8 - this is a really simple way to get started without disturbing your local dev environment - https://github.com/thom8/drupal8-vagrant *includes drush & drupal console

Or you can...

kim.pepper's picture

We have a similar project for developing with Drupal 8 https://github.com/nickschuch/vd8

Ours is better than yours. :-p

DC First-Time Sprinter Workshop

8thom's picture

It's built for DC First-Time Sprinter Workshop so purposely restricted to the minimum host dependencies of git, virtualbox & vagrant, but with these you can just... "curl -LSs bit.ly/d8install | bash" *includes project checkout & install.

Easier not necessarily better :-p

Been wanting to get in on

thursday_bw's picture

Been wanting to get in on this email.

Drupal's just a part an parcel of my daily life. I would love to attend some meet ups
and connect some more, family commitments keep me home every Thursday

I am seeing Drupal 7 projects just keep coming along while we all wait for Drupal 8.
Which is interesting when, at least from my perspective there is more and more push
towards well designed code in projects, unit test best practices etc. And drupal 8 looks to be better suited for this kind of approach.

I've been experimenting with some different coding styles, to allow for easier unit testing and finding neat solutions to plugin object oriented logic into drupal's procedural styled module hooks system.

I'm personally finding it a little bit a de-motivator to work on improvements to drupal 7, when drupal 8 promises so solve lots of drupal 7's issues.

Hi Donna! Thanks for asking.

jaime@gingerrobot.com's picture

Hi Donna!

Thanks for asking. It's so interesting reading what everyone is up to. I reduced my client work to have my second baby Oliver. He's now 8 weeks old. Not sure when I'll be getting back to working for others but I often think about doing more project management and coding in the future. Most likely I'll return to work later in 2016.

In the mean time I'm keen to try out Drupal 8. I have so many personal projects that I'd love to have systems for. I'd like to set up a plant information data base for gardeners in the area. We integrated our weather station data into our home website already but as we build more home automation systems it would be great to have a nice interface to control everything too. A family favourites recipe collection is on the list. So much general blogging to do about our 3D printing and hacking projects so a revamp of our WidgetGrove website is needed!

I'll have to wait until close to the time to commit to coming down to Melbourne for Drupal Camp, but I've loved my other trips to catch up with everyone and hear what they have to say.

Jaime.

Great updates! Thanks everyone.

Wow - how cool. So great to hear what people have been up to, and what's coming up.

It's too easy to lose track of our humanity in the tech space - so I've really enjoyed reading this thread.

Drupal8 really is just around the corner now, the critical count seems to be yo-yoing around 5, and Dries has blogged he thinks the time to start building with 8 is NOW. I'll start a new thread about that...

Congrats to the Sydney team for a great drupalGlamp - sounds like it went well!

cheers
Donna
