Here are my favorite (non-core) modules for simplifying back-end site navigation and content management/editing:

https://www.drupal.org/project/workbench - Provides authors, editors, and publishers with a unified, streamlined interface for managing content relevant to them.

https://www.drupal.org/project/editablefields - Allows fields to be edited on a node's display (e.g. at node/123), not just on the node edit pages (e.g. node/123/edit).

https://www.drupal.org/project/colorbox - Display images, iframed or inline content etc. in a overlay above the current page. (also see https://www.drupal.org/search/site/colorbox for submodules)

https://www.drupal.org/project/focus - Simple module that improves the user interface by setting focus on the first field in a form.
