Call for Lightning Talks

This month we are again putting out a call for themed lightning talks. Volunteers get between 5 to 10 minutes to present a talk. We are looking for talks on the following topics:

Images, Video and Sound. Media in Drupal

These days users expect web applications to be a visually stimulating experience. They expect a seamless integration of copy and images, background videos and embedded media. Designs that look visually stunning on any device and are mindful of the amount of data they require to render.

This month we are focusing on combining Drupal with media. From integrating it into your theme, to making it easy for content editors to embed images in the middle of a WYSIWYG and everything in between.

Some questions we'd like to see answered:

  • How do you balance the use of imagery and content?
  • What are some best practices with media and accessibility?
  • How have you implemented embedded media in Drupal 7/8?
  • What are methods for adding contextual (background) videos in a design/theme?
  • What media modules do you use and what are their benefits?
  • Background media with a text overlay, the good and the bad?
  • What are some great examples of incorporating media into a Drupal site.
  • Your Tips and tricks for making media easier to deal with?
  • What are some caveats to using hosted video platforms (youtube, vimeo)?

If you have an idea for a lightning talk on the topic of search, sign up by leaving a comment below. Perhaps your idea will inspire others.

General Lightning Talks

Along with our themed presentations we will have a call for general lightning talks. This is an open floor to ask questions, present recent work or lead other Drupal discussions. No preparation is required.

Meetup notes: media discussion

From Micky, best services for video hosting or self-hosting for videos?

...: Brightcove is doing some good things, see Brightcove media connect.

Dani: YouTube will allow a private list, which can be useful.

...: Making it public on YouTube helps your SEO.

Dani: Vimeo has better video quality, though YouTube is catching up. Vimeo is more restrictive in what they let you post, something that's too self-promotional, like a regular webcast.

...: Been using Vimeo for nonprofits for a while. They haven't had a problem with content. Problem is schools are now blocking Vimeo as well as YouTube.

Video playing for places on a map? Smithsonian has a good example.

Benjamin: For general, and simple, video embedding: Video Embed Field which supports Vimeo, YouTube, and many others (with additional contrib modules listed on their page), including our client's need to embed a TED talk video.

Mike on responsive images in Drupal 8: Using core Responsive images module, you get the option to define different image styles for different breakpoints (which are defined in the theme in a configuration file the module can read). Typically, use the smallest size as the fallback image. Takes five minutes to set up.

It's possible in Drupal 7 also, the module is in D7 contrib as well as D8 core.

Kelley: Focal point tries to pick the focus of the picture correctly so aspect rations are fixed.

Continuing the meetup notes

Continuing the meetup notes (Thanks to mincn for starting them):

Salem Ghoweri - spoke about using pattern lab as a single point of truth for hooking up front-end and back-end in Drupal for serving up responsive background images.

Ben Di Maggo - Using SCALD module in Drupal 7 for images, instead of the media module. Allows for editing and managing media assets (images) from a WYSIWYG. with a right click can manage crops for each of the contexts that an image is used in. SCALD makes use of contexts hooked up to image styles.

Thanks for the notes

Not being at the meetup, it's great to see notes with links etc. Thanks.

Gahh, "context"

bdimaggio's picture

Hey, I just wanted to clear up that the sense in which Scald uses "context" is unrelated to context module. It's the module's own term, which in this, uh, milieu, means "entity view mode." There's a full explanation here.

Ben, Thank you for the

Ben,

Thank you for the clarification and the great presentation. I'm still working on my note taking abilities.
