Each year, the Drupal community holds a Global Contribution Day, and the next one will be 25-27 January 2019. This is a good opportunity to get involved in making Drupal more accessible to everyone.

During the weekend, local user groups all over the world hold contribution events (also known as "sprints") so people can work together on any aspects of Drupal. Mentors (and other experienced contributors) are present at many of these events to help new contributors find issues to work on, and make an impact on the Drupal project. Some meetings focus on a particular topic,

See Drupal Global Contribution Weekend January 25-27, 2019 for details of events around the world. As well as in-person meetings, you can take part online in a "virtual sprint".

So who wants to work on accessibility issues during the weekend? We could hold a virtual accessibility sprint, and/or work on accessibility at the regional in-person events.

Let's coordinate in the comments below, or come and join the #accessibility channel on Slack.

  • See the full list of issues tagged accessibility for more ideas about what we could work on.
  • There's also a tag for ContributionWeekend2019 which already has some quick-win accessibility issues in there.
  • We could crowd-source some of the audit tasks we need to carry out to address the new success criteria in WCAG 2.1. For example, looking at our usage of visually-hidden text and aria-label to see if it satisfies "Label in Name", reviewing our Javascript for "Pointer Cancellation", or looking at icons and input borders for "Non-text contrast".
  • The new admin theme (code-named Claro) is being implemented. Some accessibility feedback has been addressed, the global contribution weekend would be a good time for another round of this.

Local meetup organizers: If you want to focus on accessibility issues at your meeting, or have any attendees who want to work on these, Andrew Macpherson (a core accessibility maintainer) is available to help online during the weekend. We can also coordinate in advance if you like, and find (i.e. tag) some accessibility issues to work on.

I'm attending the meeting in Leeds UK, and will be available to help online, as a virtual accessibility mentor. I'll be focussing on answering questions about accessibility, clarifying issues, and reviewing any work done during the weekend.

The Leeds sprint will focus on accessibility
