Hello all,
After attending the recent Eugene Drupal Users Group meeting, I wanted to reach out to some local networks of programmers to see if anyone had any ideas to contribute to a project that I am planning for this summer: A project management tool for activists, organizers and social movements.
I'm a student at the University of Oregon, a computer science minor, an environmental studies major and an activist. I have directed many issue/election campaigns and I started a new student group on campus. I work with organizers from across the NW on campaigns related to climate change.
With all of this experience, I have seen the gaping void when it comes to project management tools suited for activists.
I'm want to fix that by building a set of features on top on top of Open Atrium (http://openatrium.com/). I won't go into detail about these here, but the features include:
- Heirarchical group/user management with information being shared automatically based on the hierarchy
- Comprehensive meeting tool (scheduling, announcement, remind, working agenda, categorized notes)
- Task manager and timeline tool to encourage best practice planning ("reverse timelining") and to hold volunteers accountable for tasks.
I'm asking two things from this group: 1) Do you know of any grants or other funding sources that would allow me to do this as a summer job and 2) what other projects/organizations exist out there that I might want to speak to about doing such a project?
Any and all information, questions, ideas for the project, etc are welcome.
Thanks, all!

Depending on how much is code vs config
Depending on how much is code vs config, Google's summer of code program could be a good fit for this.

The GSoC needs YOU!!!
Hi there-
This sounds like an extremely awesome and useful project, and would be PERFECT for the Summer of Code. Why don't you join the 2010 GSoC group and post it as an idea? The fact that you already have an idea and you're already involved with the community would give you a big leg up on other students, and the potential social good that could come from this helps make the case for this even more.
The SoC Group is located here: http://groups.drupal.org/google-summer-code-2010
For now, you probably don't need to create a separate post, just join that group and then add it to this post (you can post to more than one group at a time).

Look for a mentor
Thanks to the encouragement of many members of the community, I have decided to puruse Google Summer of Code.
I am looking for a mentor for my project, and I thought it would be great to have a local mentor to help out, as well as an issue-expert mentor.
Would anyone be interested in helping out?
I have a draft of my proposal up on my personal site: http://wiki.auzigog.com/Drupal_Projects_for_Activists_and_Movements_-_GS...
Let me know if you are interested or if you know someone who might be interested.
