Paul Resnick and his graduate students from the University of Michigan have been working on something called pivot blocks and double pivot blocks.

In addition to the "pivot block" that shows recent related conversations, they also now have a "double pivot block" that shows related projects (projects mentioned in the same forum threads as the current project).

Improving module quality recommendations: Update on Pivots
I have received an update on pivots and double pivots from Daniel (Xiaodan) Zhou at the University of Michigan. He now has parallel implementations of the double pivots in both Java and PHP. He plans to have a new CVS commit as well as documentation in the near future.
