I would say there are two
I would say there are two ways todo it:
Because you ask 1) seams to be not the case yet, so...
find a mentor
So many people have asked me to teach them Drupal that I am hoping this site will be useful to those who want to teach and those who wish to learn the fabulous thing called Drupal!
I am building a learning/teaching hub at drupalconnection.com
Drupal Kitchen is a part of the hub and is now open for people to meet and learn Drupal.
I would love any feedback and/or offers of help to increase the usefulness of this site for the community!
This is my first Drupal site, so I am open to suggestions at making it better!!!

No content
I don't see any content :( .
One suggestion is there are lots of awesome themes in drupal that you want to utilize .

Theme things
I just chose a basic theme and did not do anything to it. Theming is not something I have investigated yet. Is there a theme you would suggest?
There is no content until students and tutors fill out profiles, then they are able to contact eachother and set up private tutoring/mentoring sessions.
Any ideas are welcome!

Micky, I visited your site
Micky, I visited your site and noticed it's... empty. I understand, our site is in need of some serious updating.
What part of the country do you live in?
Honestly, I don't think Summer of Code is the right place for the mentoring you're talking about.
As far as DrupalKitchen is concerned, I'm going to ask a seemingly stupid question - are you sending these people to local Drupal meetups?
There is a groups.drupal.org group called Curriculum and Training where a bunch of folks who offer training services gather to discuss things like your Drupal Kitchen... at least if I understand your intent.

Just started today -
I am in Boston - The site is empty because it just came online today... the content will be input from tutors and students that create profiles. The site is not really designed to "send" anyone to a destination, it is just a simple site to help people connect for private one on one tutoring in a specific feature/area of Drupal.
I will post a link to groups.drupal.org group - Curriculum and Training - I realize there is a great forum there, but I did not see an easy way to hook up with a local tutor.
I think you are correct about my placement of the info - sorry for that one...
