Start:
2007-11-14 18:00 - 20:00 US/Pacific

What would you guys like to see discussed at this next meeting? CCK + Views? More theming? Any one want to show off sites they've been working on? Discuss your new favorite module?

We'll be at the Bus Project for the meeting and then if there's demand, we can step across the street to Produce Row. See the Google Map for directions to both locations.

Debugging

I would appreciate going over debugging using some of the different IDEs or other methods.

Loading Content

Less esoteric, but the big road block for me is getting content into a site. Yes there are editor interfaces, but hey're slow and clumsy, especially as in many instances many articles, notes, diagrams, emails, etc have already been produced and merely need 'loading' with tags (taxonomy).

A meeting focused on best ways to get content up fast and easy, both initally to populate a site, and then subsequently, to make it easy for material to come from experts with lttle interface skill... would be what I would wish for.

I like this idea too

shayne's picture

Different ways to efficiently migrate various content types/data from other dynamic or static sites to Drupal would definitely be of value to me.

I like the debugging idea.

I like the debugging idea. I've been using Eclipse with PDT, and have struggled to get the debugging working consistently. Would be nice in general to see what tools people are using.

I also two sites I would be happy to discuss, at least briefly. One is about to be released, newsvetter.com, and the other is ready for some marketing, momhub.com.

The devel module is your best friend

marcp's picture

I've been using Zend Development Environment for a couple years and it's nice, but now I mostly just use it as an editor. I use the devel module's dpm function to print debugging info to the messages area on the page and it works great.

CCK + Views + theming

shayne's picture

Yeah, an overview of CCK + Views always seems to be helpful to me. It would also be nice to learn more about theming the resulting CCK/Views output.

I'd be happy with anything

yopyop's picture

I'd be happy with anything that's presented - CCK, views and theming in real world examples would all be interesting and things I need to work on myself. I'd be interested in how people have customized/structured their front page to avoid the default 'river of news' look.. not only how but why.

I'd love to show people the website i've been working on, pdxpeace.org - and love to hear input on ways to make it better, and open it up to more posting by membership (without turning it into anarchy, a la indymedia).

I know that taking up lots of time on one person's issues can not be the best way to manage the short amount of time in meetings, though. It'd be great to have real quick 10-15 min presentations where people show their drupal sites and related accomplishments or problems - like impactportland (which i missed, doh!) or barcamp quick sessions..

barcamp!

drewish's picture

i do like the barcamp idea. sign up for 15 minutes to show something off, ask a question... that could be a fun way to handle it.

having a segment of meetings

yopyop's picture

having a segment of meetings for people to bring questions about their site, and presented with a 10-15 minute limit, might help those who have limited interest in whatever is being discussed. I have been at meetings where someone brings up their site, and a fairly complicated problem is discussed at length, which is great - but it eats up alot of time, and usually involves the conversation of 2-3 people that would be better continued outside the larger circle.

Isn't that why

bonobo's picture

we go to the bar :)

I'd love to...

jsimonis's picture

I'd love to be able to come in and show a few things we've done with some of the front pages I've been involved with. Or to discuss CCK and Views. Over the past 8 months or so, I've been doing quite a bit of work with those two modules - seems I can barely get a site up anymore without having to use them quite a bit (along with contemplate).

But unfortunately the monthly meeting is the same night as our Neighborhood Coalition meeting out here in Gresham. Being a Neighborhood Assoc. president, it is a meeting I have to be at.

It's all good

grantkruger's picture

Both debugging and CCK/Views seems useful to me. Truth be told it's all useful to me right now, but these are two biggies. Devel is great but a PHP debugger would show one more, while also teaching one some things about how it all ties together. However, I do agree that smaller topics are best discussed at the bar.

Base themes?

drewish's picture

I just wanted to throw this in to the meeting idea mix. This thread has a great listing of the various "raw" themes to use as a base for building your own theme: http://groups.drupal.org/node/6353

Willing Presenter

wolv3rin3's picture

We would be up for putting together a CCK/Views 'presentation'. Of more interest (for us) would be demonstrating a module we released that allows for some powerful extensions of CCK/Views. E.G. creating a tabbed navigation that is essentially a View inserted back into the node as a field (cck), or aggregating (and styling) media content from multiple nodes into one view.

Whatever's most helpful/interesting to the group.

sonds good to me

drewish's picture

well, unless someone else wants to present i'd say it's all you. if someone else wants to, we could split the meeting in two.

Shucks!

matt westgate's picture

I'll be out of town for this one. One of these days, oh yes, one of these days I'm soo gonna be there!

Presentation this Week

wolv3rin3's picture

Wanted to check back in on a possible agenda for the meeting on Wednesday. If there's interest, we'll put together a 15-20 minute presentation/overview of CCK/View topics plus a module for extending their use (without having to get your hands messy with Contemplate). The intent will be for the presentation to lead into discussion.

Let us know if that's still of interest.

If not, we'll just happily show up and contribute to whatever conversation naturally evolves.

uh huh!

calebtr's picture

I would be interested in hearing this and whatever discussion ensues, and will try to make it.

Meeting Reminder

drewish's picture

Just wanted to remind everyone that the meeting is tomorrow night.

Sounds like rockitdp will be doing a presentation on their module.

I've got another meeting at the same time so I'm going to try to sneak out of it as soon as I can and head over to the Bus Project. I hope to see you all there.

Meeting Space Resources?

wolv3rin3's picture

What resources will be available tonight at the meeting space? Internet (we hope)? A monitor or screen for presentations/discussion?

time and location...

willhall-dupe's picture

hey i don't see the time and location on the sidebar of group events for the nov meeting?
