instance-store vs ebs

Recently, I began experimenting with ec2 using the Mercury/pressflow ami-e14c1da4. I then installed Aegir on my own before I saw macrocosm's excellent tutorial on how to go about things here: http://groups.drupal.org/node/55393. I didn't attaching any EBS drives, for example.

Now that I've installed Aegir, and my handful of sites, on their various platforms, I would like to keep all that configuration, and make it easy to backup.

As far as I understand things (and that's not far!), we want EBS drives for MySql and web root to facilitate backup? Is that right? Wouldn't we then want the root device to also be an EBS device for the same reason?

Also, can I just spin up and EBS device and move my MySql and web roots now to get the same effect as the tutorial? (Sorry if that question was so dumb it hurt your brain. :))

Thanks in advance for any help, much appreciated!

Yes you should be able to do

Yes you should be able to do that (move your mysql) .. I would have early on though just in case of errors... though im sure you have backups of all your sites anyhow, so go for it.

I had trouble with the latest mercury 1.1 and aegir but I might try again & update the doc. Im wondering what will happen with mercury 1.2 so I might wait a bit longer.

I was just thinking about the ebs store for the main myself again. Would be neat... you wouldn't have to move your mysql (or anything), it could all be on the one drive if that's what you wanted.

You are correct... you always want EBS drives for the OS and for MySQL.
