Symlink to my modules dump not working

Hello,
I'm running my BOA deployment on amazon's ec2 and it's been an experience. It works but i've got my eyes on it constantly to make sure it works as it should.

We've got issues with bandwidth over here in Nigeria so i prefer to have a dump of the possible modules that i may need for different projects being hosted on the Octopus instances.

My dump is stored on the ec2 default user home folder and i would like to symlink it to the sites/all/modules/"my_contribs" link/folder. I created a symlink but it didn't take. My site didn't read the modules folder. I changed the permissions to 755, chown'd it to root but still no success.

Moving from VirtualBox to Amazon's EC2

I'm excited about Quickstart, but would like to have some more direction about how to deploy this, not as a virtual instance on my desktop but on a server. I'm particularly interested in seeing how to move a customized instance over from my VirtualBox over to EC2.

There's a there's a thread here - https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/1944

Which point to places like:

Amazon EC2 and Aegir

After much trial and error, I finally got Aegir running in the cloud! This is my first time trying either Aegir or Amazon's Web Services. Being able to provision a new Drupal site with a few clicks is a very neat trick.

I'd be eager to discuss these topics at the September meetup.

Solr failing on 1.1

I've got an install of mercury 1.1 on an ec2 tiny ubuntu instance. All seems to be going fine, except apache solr. Solr seems to quit periodically. When I run a search on the drupal site, I get a message saying "drupal can't connect to apache solr". If I restart tomcat6, the search runs OK, but then fails again after about half an hour.

I had a look at the tomcat log files, here is the last line form /var/log/tomcat6/catalina.out

Clarification on EBS volumes, snapshots, and Mercury 1.1beta

Hello,

I've had a Mercury 1.1beta setup at Amazon using an AMI for a few months now. Since this box has been a development box, I hadn't bother to setup automatic snapshots. I was doing them manually from time to time.

Now that we are getting closer to something that will become production, I would like to enable automatic snapshots.

At the time I setup my first instance, which happens to be Instance Store - I followed the document "Set up EBS for Mercury" which describes how to attach an EBS volume and copy www-data and MySQL data to the attached EBS volume.

A good Drupal hosting setup/Running Mecury AND Aegir on AWS

Hey Guys,

Just wondering if anyone has any experience running Drupal on AWS with at least Aegir. Ideally I'm thinking it would be great to have a setup similar to Pantheon's new service but I'm not sure I can wait that long.

instance-store vs ebs

Recently, I began experimenting with ec2 using the Mercury/pressflow ami-e14c1da4. I then installed Aegir on my own before I saw macrocosm's excellent tutorial on how to go about things here: http://groups.drupal.org/node/55393. I didn't attaching any EBS drives, for example.

Now that I've installed Aegir, and my handful of sites, on their various platforms, I would like to keep all that configuration, and make it easy to backup.

EC2 Offering "MySQL Cloud"

Today Amazon announced a provided service for hosting MySQL databases in the cloud: Amazon Relational Database Service. It starts at $0.11/hr, plus $0.10 per GB/month of storage and $0.10 per million I/O requests. The real interesting question is how these will perform. The instances come in many flavors:

  • Small: 1.7 GB memory, 1 virtual core with 1 ECU. $0.11/hr
  • Large: 7.5 GB memory, 2 virtual cores with 2 ECUs each. $0.44/hr
  • Extra Large: 15 GB of memory, 4 virtual cores with 2 ECUs each. $0.88/hr
  • Double Extra Large: 34 GB of memory, 4 virtual cores with 3,25 ECUs each. $1.55/hr
  • Quadruple Extra Large: 68 GB of memory, 8 virtual cores with 3.25 ECUs each. $3.10/hr

That "Quadrupal XL" is pretty big! I'll be investigating this for Pantheon, but anyone else with experience/info, let's figure out how good these things really are!
