Hi,

Can you believe it's that time again already? The Drupal Brighton meetup is scheduled for next Tuesday.

Any requests for topics or offers of presentations?

Don't be shy...

Hi Steve.

I attended an intro-to-Drupal talk that you did last year (maybe earlier). I found it very helpful and encouraging but I never got round to trying Drupal properly. Recently I've got started and I'm loving it but I'm still very much a Drupal beginner.

With that in mind, would this meetup be a good thing for me to attend or should I wait until I've had a bit more time playing with Drupal? I'm currently building my first basic social network and would love to tap some of you guys for tips and fellow geekery.

Will trade beer and roll-ups for help and advice :)

Cheers.

What do you want to know?

Hiya

Are there any specific things you're looking for right now? Perhaps we could gear the meeting around that...

More details....

WOW. That would be a very cool thing.

Well, how's about I give you a (very) brief run down of what I'm trying to build.

A social network with many of the usual basic features: free user accounts with custom fields, group creation, commenting, 'friend' relationships.

Each user will be able to embed (I thinking of using oEmbed) media from other sites: video, audio, images, documents. This embedded media will be associated with that user and other users will be able to comment on such media and rate it.

Then there's just the usual guff like most recent and highest rated content dynamically populate the front page. I'm also really interested in customising the client's user account role so that it's very simple for them to do basic admin and moderation (with no extra guff that'll only confuse them - I'm looking at you WordPress...).

The job is for a client (not for me). I know it sounds a bit odd - you should've seen what they were asking for originally! They are aware that I'm teaching myself as I go and are cool with it.

I've already read a fair bit about what modules would be appropriate for such a project. I guess what I'm lacking is the experience of working with said modules and experience in Moodle basics such as theming and CCK/views (I've done a little, I get the thinking, I just need more practice).

So you know - I have plenty of WordPress dev experience (hence jumping to Drupal!), am comfortable with code and am a reasonably fast learner.

Is that worth gearing a meeting around? Would we just chat or would we take a look at examples and get our hands dirty?

Build a social network in an hour?

stevepurkiss's picture

So something like 'Building a Social Networking Site with Drupal in an Hour'?

I could briefly go over various modules for friending, messaging, profiles, etc.

Yes please

8pm, next Tues (15th)

I'll post up the event to all the usual places!

See you next week,

Sounds good

This does sound good. I'll try to make this. 8pm is a great start time too as I can get home, sort out kids for bed and get to the skiff. Hard to get to the werks for 7/8pm without a special evening pass.

I started looking at Drupal for a band site/social site and I've slacked off as work got busy; this presentation might get me going again. There are other ways to do this but I want experience of Drupal. I got so far using ??CCK?? (customised data) and views which all seems to work. But I've let it slip so the social side sounds good. The kind of thing I'm thinking is allowing people to add links e.g. youtube, news etc and try to import feeds from a variety of places like facebook RSS, twitter, google alerts/news so that anything mentioning a bands name will get pulled in.

I've been reading about the 960 grid framework too which drupal uses I think so this might be of interest at some point.

Great to see you hosting stuff like this just that I'm terrible at getting out to developer stuff usually.

Jas

Excellent!

stevepurkiss's picture

Great, look forward to seeing you there.

Feel free to ask specific stuff after the initial presentation, will try and answer as best I can.

Re 960 grid - I'm now using Fusion theme with skinr module, check it out - reusable CSS!

It's good to meet up with fellow Drupaler's, there don't seem to be many around in Brighton and I get 'rowry' working on my own ;)

See you then!

Thanks

Thanks for the Drupal stuff last night.

Ended up with a new site kind of working and with embedded video.

All good stuff. I just couldn't get Skinr to work for some reason but I won't go on here!

Jas

twas a pleasure!

stevepurkiss's picture

Glad you enjoyed it!

You might want to try out the new skinr dev stuff, it's really cool and I got it working ok from the instructions on the thread here:

I'm working on getting the info from lastnight up soon...

Jase, did you get oEmbed working for you?

oembed

jasebailey's picture

Hi
I didn't need it. I just wanted to embed a youtube video for now and did this by adding a textarea with html format. I found a learn by the drop video on it which I can find if you're interested.

Skinr is the thing causing me problems as the moment.

Yeah, saw that one:

It uses the Embedded Media Field Module that I checked out earlier this week. Sadly that module doesn't seem to cater for embedded documents (a la Scribd) which is something that I may need.
