DrupalEd 5.4 is now out.
This new release incorporates a security upgrade. Although DrupalEd was not affected by the specific conditions that triggered this upgrade, upgrading core is strongly recommended.
This release also incorporates some recent module upgrades. For the full details, read the upgrade_notes.txt file available in the download.

I see Drupal is up to 5.5
I see Drupal is up to 5.5 now. Do you recommend waiting for DrupalEd5.5, or going ahead with DrupalEd5.4 and then upgrading the Drupal installation within DrupalEd? Thanks.
DrupalEd 5.5 coming shortly
Drupal core went to 5.4 on December 5th -- we got the upgrade to DrupalEd out on December 6th, and Drupal went to 5.5 a few hours later. The upgrade to 5.5 is a bugfix release, and not a security release, so we are planning on getting the 5.5 release out within the next few days.
RE: "Do you recommend waiting for DrupalEd5.5, or going ahead with DrupalEd5.4 and then upgrading the Drupal installation within DrupalEd?" -- I'd grab 5.4, and then do the upgrade to 5.5. This will get you up and running now, as opposed to waiting a couple days. This will also get you comfortable with upgrading your Drupal install, which will be part of the process of maintaining your site over time, as DrupalEd is core drupal with contrib modules, plus the config options.
Cheers,
Bill

Thanks! Will do, and I am
Thanks! Will do, and I am looking forward to trying out DrupalEd.
I have not gotten around to
I have not gotten around to updating to 5.3 yet. Do I need to update to 5.3 before going to 5.4?
User having trouble with DrupalED
I am posting this on behalf of http://groups.drupal.org/user/13917 as requested via the contact form.
I made my post about drupaled only to find a spam problem, enter the
gaphic. since I am blind I can not submit my post. this was the first time
I ran in to this in drupal. I was disappointed, why are you taking these
mesures when this is a system you have to log in to. I do understand
though. if you could post this for me in the drupaled thred I would
appreciate it. I would love to use this distro very baddly but need some
help.
Thanks message is below:
I have installed this and am finding it confusing: here is what I have
wrote, Hope it is ok to post here, maybe you all could help me get going
and once I'm there, maybe I'll have enough notes to add to the
documentation and make things easier. If this is not the place, would you
please direct me where to go?
I have done a lot of searching on google and on drupal.org and I'm not
seeming to be able to find the answers I am looking for. I have drupaled
5.4 installed and some test users, but the questions I have are:
1. can the users send mail online to one another. I find the buddy list a
bit on the confusing side for people and that only allows them to send
normal email and their email address is shown. It would be nice if this was
a configurable option.
2. how should a student hand in there assignment to the teacher only.
The teacher will have sound files and other formats that she will need to
give to students at different times depending on their progress as they
work independently and no student should have access to any material but
what the teacher has given them when they are ready.
Maybe it is just me but this setup seems a little confusing to me. Is
there anyone out there who would be willing to lend a hand to make the site
more efficient and maybe a bit more streamlined to what I am after? I just
can not get my mind rapped around it I guess.
Thanks.
It does look great and the feature list is right on, I just can not make
it go:).
btw: I'll update my profile on your site so you have my email as well.
Michelle -- thank you for
Michelle -- thank you for forwarding this along -- I'll post a thread in the Maintenance group about the accessibility issue (whoops -- should have known you would have already done it -- thanks -- ).
RE the questions:
This is functionality covered by the Private Message module: http://drupal.org/project/privatemsg -- you will need to download and install this module
This functionality is also not in the site -- it is covered by the Content Access module and the ACL module. ACL extentds the functionality of Content Access. You can get these modules at http://drupal.org/project/content_access and http://drupal.org/project/acl
However, Organic Groups (the module used to create the group functionality) does not play well with other access control modules. My question is: how many users will be in the site? How many teachers, and how many students?
Because, if you don't need the group/course functionality, you might be able to get better functionality using Content Access/ACL without Organic Groups. Or, if you will have a small number of students and teachers, you might be able to create a group for every student/teacher pairing and get the privacy you need via Organic Groups, without using Content Access.
Feel free to ask any additional questions.
Cheers,
Bill

OG does play well
could you elaborate on how OG does not play well with other node access modules. To my knowledge, it is a model implementation of node access. There are a few use cases which core node access does not support, and thats not a fault of OG.
Writing quickly
Hello, Moshe,
I was writing quickly, and referring more to the situation imposed by the current state of node access, where a user only needs one grant in order to view a node.
This has been discussed at great length in various places -- IIRC, Earl Miles did a session addressing access control at Drupalvon in Sunnyvale; agentrickard currently has a patch in the queue addressing similar issues; and somebodysysop has been wrestling with this for a real long time; to name a few.
Again, writing quickly here -- I'll be glad to find links later when I have more time (although I don't know if Earl's talk is available online anywhere).
So, in my original post, delete: "However, Organic Groups (the module used to create the group functionality) does not play well with other access control modules."
and replace with: "Whenever possible, using only one method of access control on an individual node can simplify things."
Sorry about any confusion.
Cheers,
Bill
