How are people categorizing/structuring their directory?

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

Hi all,

I'm wondering what methods you folks are using to actually structure/categorize your directory tree?

Are you using a hierarchical taxonomy and applying it to your nodes?

Tyswan, I'm wondering if you could tell me how you are creating the linked directory tree on the home page of your directory index page?

Many thanks!

Node based

olalindberg's picture

Hi!

I have created one specific content type for my directory (http://leverantorslistan.itbranschen.se/) then I have set up different vocabularies with for example field of business that is possible to select when creating nodes. If you are interested see http://groups.drupal.org/node/6780#comment-19946 where I tried to describe my approach.

Best regards,

Ola

Category Module

Hi Mike,

Sorry for not getting back in touch earlier, I have been AWOL for some time now and am only just getting back to re-building my site, which I will be doing intensively over the next 4-6 weeks.

The directory tree on the index page is created automatically out of the Category Module. Category is a great module, has a few irritating bugs, but works like magic.

Unfortunately it's a huge beastie, and does so much that I think it's quite difficult to maintain. The module developer (Jaza I think), did not produce a 5.0 version, and will only provide a 6.0 module, which is not going to be useful to me as I have to urgently rebuild my site on a stable platform in the next two months.

I will be researching alternative options for using taxonomy, various smaller taxonomy modules, and hand-coding php pages/views to produce a similar approach.

I'd follow up Ola's suggestions and see if there is anything you can work with there.

On a related note, I found that in many ways the huge directory tree structure was not always the best approach for people finding what they needed. I think that having alternative approaches, such as a flat category list (like Michelle uses on her site), is very attractive and compact.

I plan to provide several different navigation options on the new site, and the tree structure will only be one of these.

I'll be getting down and dirty with technical approaches to this exact problem (ie. how to replace category module functionality) over the next couple of days, so stay tuned.

Hope that helps.

There *is* a 5.0 version of Category

tyswan's picture

Hmmm, I'm absolutely sure it wasn't there when I looked in October... but Jaza has ported Category to 5.0.

It has one irritating bug to do with menu proliferation (pulls hair out), but the headache of trying to replicate all of my category based functionality using other taxonomy modules is too daunting a task given my current deadline, so I have simply opted to go with category again.

Installed the 5.0 module. Seems okay so far on my test site :)

It also means that when Category (minus major bugs) is ported to 6.0, I'll be able to simply upgrade my site to 6.0 without a headache.

Probably doesn't really help anyone else, but I'm happy :)

Cheers,

tys

Jaza went on a world trip about a year ago. Dunno if he's back yet. Bdragon has been maintaining category since then.
