The status of DrupalMU and prospects for DrupalCon2008 Boston

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

I am very interested in DrupalMU and I am interested in learning from your experiences.
I have been working on an Installation Profile for an out-of-the-box community site (http://www.shareduniverse.net).

So here are some questions that someone might be able to answer.

General

  1. What is the status of DrupalMU?

Installation Profiles

  1. I think it is characterized not as a contributed module but as an Installation Profile of a bunch of modules. Is that right?
  2. If so, is DrupalMU going to be a part of Drupal 6? Drupal 7?
  3. What does it take to get an Installation Profile to become part of core? (i.e. part if the drupal-X.Y.tar.gz distribution)

DrupalCon2008 Boston

  1. Will anyone associated with DrupalMU be at the DrupalCon2008 in Boston?
  2. Will there be any code sprint activities regarding DrupalMU on that Friday?

If so, I would love to touch base with some of you to collaborate.

Hey Stephen, First of all

Hey Stephen,

First of all thank you for your interest in the project. As it currently stands I will not be able to make it to Boston because of financial restrictions. Since I'm currently the only person working on DrupalMU, this means it will have no presence. If I were to make it, there will definitely be a code sprint on Friday, along with some asset module activity.

DrupalMU will indeed be an installation profile as you can see on the DrupalMU project page. There is currently no contribution yet. Most of my time is going into getting asset alpha 3 out, after which I will work on DrupalMU alpha 1 for Drupal 5. It will probably take a couple of weeks to get a first version out for Drupal 6. It would be great to get some extra hands on this project, if not only in terms of sharing ideas on what to do with the WYSIWYG and selection of the default themes.

I think there are currently no installation profiles that are port of core (Drupal 5 or Drupal 6) so I'm not sure what the procedure is. I take it the most popular profiles will make it into Drupal 7 (I'm expecting a "blog" profile).

Just takes contributions

There have been discussion about accepting additional profiles into core. The restriction will be that they must be created using core modules only.

Wim, I'm interested in where you're going with this. I don't have a talk planned on install profiles, but I'll probably run a BoF. I haven't entered it into the schedule yet.

Adrian has "make installation profiles suck less" on his D7 battle plan. I have "work with greggles on more / better install profiles" on mine. I think we should target D6 for making new ones (there are multi page wizards available as part of install process), and see how far we get, noting any blockers as improvements to go into D7.

DrupalMU with only core modules?

Hi Boris,

I don't think multi-user blogging will happen with core modules only. For instance we definitely need users to be able to moderate comments on their nodes only, or a monthly archive block per user, or the ability to change themes per blog for instance. I'm currently very busy creating the installation profile for Drupal 6, so expect an update soon!
