WNY Drupal User Group: August 2010 Meeting
We are continually defining "down to the wire" here, aren't we? We're going to mix things up a bit more for this WNYDUG meeting by holding it in Niagara Falls. That's right, "Slowly I turn," etc. We need a couple of presenters, too -- one code-heavy & one click-heavy still work for everyone? Remote attendee information included below.

Wine on Third is a welcome addition to the renewal of the entertainment strip in the Falls, USA--a block south of RT-104 (Main Street). It's literally the northeast corner of Third and Ferry, with nearby free parking on the street or in the lot directly in back. If necessary, there is also a small public lot, across the way and another block south (toward the Seneca Casino). If you stick close to the wine bar, you should be fine.
Remember to allow time for traffic & construction if you're coming out in person from points South, East, or North. (I guess that's all of them...)
ANY thanks to John W, who secured their fine dining room for the meeting (the restaurant is closed Tuesdays). In case you're in a rush getting there from work, they have an excellent small plates Tapas menu. Their full wine bar (with beer and mixed drinks) will, of course, be open. I plan to support the business opening their doors to us -- anybody want to split a bottle? :)

Here's an update on tomorrow's meeting details from Brian Fending--and, may I add, the destination is worth the trip alone. In case you've been looking for a change of pace from the same old same old in the Falls, this is it.

Sticking with our "third Tuesday of the month" schedule, tomorrow night (17 Aug) should be the next in-person-plus-remote user group meeting. I realize that the node announcing this was posted late last week -- John W was nice enough to come through with a venue for us and I've honestly been too busy to chase down any details. As I mentioned at the close of July's meeting, I could really use some help on the meeting planning; this is further evidence of that need!
Anyway, if you haven't signed up, please do so. If the consensus is "that's too far", please chime in on that node at http://groups.drupal.org/western-new-york. I hope to see some of you there or at least trying out the gotomeeting for a change.
If we don't have presenters, I'll maybe informally talk about subtheming based on the popular ninesixty theme (itself based on 906.gs), maybe multisite, or maybe my firm's use of Storm.module for client communication. We'll sort of base that on the attendees and pass the mic / screen between presenters.

We actually had really low turnout, so I doubt the WNYDUG will be back in Niagara Falls, NY anytime soon. (Without a compelling reason, anyway.)
I've been watching some of the commentary in this group about city v. region. FWIW, our WNY group was originally submitted as the Buffalo, NY group. When that request was denied, I had to expand to a region (WNY), even though the Rochester, NY group already existed (but never met). As of today, the older Rochester group merged into the WNY group, and we're actively discussing critical mass and our current multi-city meeting model. I think once we've picked up enough steam and have at least one leader (e.g.: person who knows drupal, does the necessary event marketing, and sets up meetings) resident in a city, multiple per-city meetups can work. Until then, we're trying to consolidate our efforts on the administrivia and using gotomeeting to accommodate at least 20% of every meeting's attendance roster, moving the physical meeting about between cities. It's not perfect, but it's a start.
I think Dries said it best with "Collaboration over planning", and we're doing our best to stay true to that while helping each other grow Drupal in our region.
