Finish What We Started: Coding for a Cause 2010

We encourage users to post events happening in the community to the community events group on https://www.drupal.org.

Waaaaay back in February, we started something that we never completed. Now is the time to do the right thing and finish what we started.

As part of Florida DrupalCamp 2010, we committed to building new sites for two local non-profit organizations: the Greater Orlando Mothers of Twins and Triplets and Junior Achievement of Central Florida. While we made great progress on both sites, but neither site was ever completed. We underestimated the necessary theming effort for both sites.

This weekend, we're planning on finishing up both sites, but we need as much help as we can get. Thanks to MindComet (directions to their office in Altamonte Springs), we've been able to arrange an extended September meetup starting at 10am on Saturday, September 11 (http://groups.drupal.org/node/88514). We'll be using some leftover funds from Florida DrupalCamp 2010 to provide drinks, snacks, and lunch for all participants.

Everyone is invited to participate. Even if you don't have any experience with theming a Drupal site, we'll find something for you to do and to learn. In particular, we're looking for people with experience with:

  • Drupal theming
  • XHTML/CSS
  • SVN
  • GIT (we really need someone familiar with GIT)
  • Project management (cat herder)

The plan is for us to get started at 10am. The first couple of hours will most likely be spent on getting both sites updated with the latest Drupal core and module updates as well as general planning for the day. Hopefully by lunchtime we'll be able to start handing out tasks. Again, if you're a newbie and want to learn some Drupal theming, this is a great opportunity to work with an experienced themer on a real site.

For those of you not in Central Florida, find some other local Drupalists and plan a road trip. Don't want to make the drive? Participate virtually via Skype and/or the #drupal-florida channel on IRC.

If you're planning on attending (either in-person or virtually), please let us know in the comment form below. Please indicate the following:

  • Your experience level
  • How comfortable you are with source code control (SVN or GIT)
  • How you'd like to help out
  • What your availability is for the day

Let's get these two sites out so that we can use them as a form of promotion for Florida DrupalCamp 2011!

Thanks,
-mike

Your experience level -

  • Your experience level - According to Dries' learning curve I'm above the I kick ass threshold, but certainly towards the lower end
  • How comfortable you are with source code control - fairly comfortable but need more experience using it with collaborators
  • How you'd like to help out - however I can
  • What your availability is for the day - I can be there the whole day I believe

Well, following Gil and

bhosmer's picture

Well, following Gil and Dries' I am below the "Kick Ass" but above the "I suck".

I was there in February and had little experience, but feel pretty comfortable now with what I am doing.

I can also help wherever I am needed and I can be there pretty much the entire day.

Unfortunately, I can't make

Unfortunately, I can't make it now. I broke my vehicle today and need to repair it tomorrow. Sorry. Since I was Ed's ride, he is in need of someone to give him a lift. He can meet at the Chik-fil-a in Viera.

I'll contact Ed and see if we

I'll contact Ed and see if we can work this out.

I hope to be there

• I have some experience with Drupal. I probably suck but might be a bit better than that. I'm always looking for opportunities to suck less.

• I have some experience with GIT and SVN but haven't used it in a team setting. Experimentation but not much use in anger.

• I'd like to help in any way that is needed. I've done a fair amount of front end work and some project management as well.

• I should be available all day.

I wasn't sure if I'd be able

I wasn't sure if I'd be able this weekend or not, but it looks like I'll be able to help out wherever needed. I'm on the West coast now, so it probably isn't a good idea to have me lead on GOMOTT theming again, but I can definitely be available to help out via Skype and IRC, and I'm familiar with where we were on the GOMOTT site.

I plan to attend

I am a newbie, so I'll be coming to learn.

Have significant experience with PHP, MySQL, HTML, CSS. Drupal, not so much.

Will be glad to help in any way I am needed.

Plan to be there by 10A and stay thru the afternoon.

Lynn and I plan to attend.

Lynn and I plan to attend. Being newbies it's mostly to observe but we'll be pleased to help, if possible, as well. See you guys around 10 AM.

I'll be there! Looking

BLadwin's picture

I'll be there! Looking forward to wrapping up these projects. Have we tried to get in contact with people from either organization to see if they will be available to attend (my question is not declaring that I'm volunteering to make these calls)? I think it's not only important that we complete the sites' functionality and theme, but that we "re-kindle" the enthusiasm that was present in February and make sure that the sites are going to be used.

My skill level - I'm no chx, but i've been known to Rock quite a few Drupal Sites!
SVN or GIT - Well, i'm pretty good with SVN, especially with fixing conflicts. Haven't tried GIT yet, but am working on getting it setup.
Help? - i am assuming that i'll be taking the lead on JA theming.
Availability? - I'll be there all day :c)

Bladwin,

I just sent you an email about this - you can ignore it now.

I've been in touch with both Kelly (from GOMOTT) and Deb (from JA) and they'll be there tomorrow.

I'll be there as well...

Hope to arrive around 10am, might be a little late.

I am definitely a newbie, but willing to help if and where I am able.

I herd cats on a day-to-day basis (and have a MS degree in the science of it), but I am very overwhelmed by anything and everything Drupal at the moment.

Your experience level - I started drupal a month ago. But I have done some tasks like setting up drupal, create new contents, taxonomy, CCK, Views, plus module development and theming.
I have read 2 books about drupal. But I never really start to code any drupal site yet. But I have good foundation of drupal knowledge, strong skills on CSS and HTML.

How comfortable you are with source code control: No experience on those, willing to learn.

How you'd like to help out - however I can

What your availability is for the day - I will be there at 10am and leave around 3:30pm.

No Ride...

emcconnell's picture

I don't have transportation. Ben was going to take me but is having car trouble.

I will try to work remotely.

I am sure I can handle some theming.

Ed,

You can ride over with me if you'd like - check your email...

I'll be there

obobfla's picture

Well, I am barely above "I suck," but I will be there. If nothing else, I can check or write any copy, plus do any wireframing. The only SVN and GIT knowledge I have is what I googled tonight.

Fun...

emcconnell's picture

Had a great time! If there are any open tasks that I can help with let me know.
