Hello friends!
I hear at the acquia webinar that OpenScholar planing to integrate some university functional.
I discussed few projects for universities and large medical centers and I think that such sites need microsites with own spaces and features for faculties or departments.
I decided to built this system. I think this system could be very expected, because it meets requirments of large communities. Imagine community of some association with main site and many microsites of organizations who make this community.
I think this's very useful architecture. Because anyone can create content only of his microsite. Even for large company which have a lot of departments.
What do you think?

university system infrastructure

Daniel, at ServanTek, we have been working on designing the architecture for open system university that will accommodate a small school with several departments and academic programs, but be able to scale when the solution is needed for a large university.

Our research shows that there is a great need for CMS to become the heart of the online system for a school that has both physical and online campuses. Drupal is the CMS that is capable of becoming the core system for open university system.

We are working now on integrations with several open source projects (Moodle, Elgg, openSIS) together with Google Apps. Many people have done some work in this area, but there is a need to maintain updated information on how to deploy integrations with other open source project.

I propose to get our efforts together and get started on building the bank of knowledge for those who are willing to try new ways of doing education in online world using Drupal and other open source projects.

Well, sounds good, Vtitarchuk! Google Apps may be some bridge between drupal and other platforms. I mean Java and python/django platforms in the first place!
But I'm talking about specific drupal architecture for universties. Of course we can include some bridges in such package!

Interested in this project

Daniel and vtitarchuk, I am very interested in this project. The Foundation For Caregivers is working on a new site/service to help small nonprofits easily (meaning no tech staff required) raise funds for their own operation.

Our mission is to “care for those who care for others” and our community consists of small nonprofits located all over the globe. Specifically we intend the new service to help them raise funds as this is their most basic, essential, and universal need. Our needs may differ slightly from academia, but I am sure whatever you develop will either fit of be adaptable. The key requirement that may be different is that we need to have the ability for each microsite owner to upload their own PayPal (or equivalent) code (as easily as uploading an image) so that they can have their own account to receive donations directly. We need the upload to be secure and super simple.

Basically we want to be able to allow our (the Foundation’s main site) users to make donations/payments directly to the nonprofits (the individual microsites) and to log any donations/payments so that we can clear the pledge the user recorded on the Foundation’s site. We need to be able to upsell the user; to have them make a donation to the Foundation as well as the small nonprofit. When we are successful at the upsell it will be a 2-stage payment processing operation, for example, make a $10 donation to the Foundation (using our PayPal account) and then make a $10 donation to the microsite nonprofit on their PayPal (or other) account, and then return the user to the Foundation’s site.

I can imagine others using this model and taking a percentage of the monies paid to the microsite owner, but we don’t need to do anything with the microsite’s actual payment processing stream as all donated monies go to the microsite owner and are isolated from our own donation stream. We are a nonprofit and will rely on our ability to upsell donors; the Foundation takes no part of whatever monies the nonprofit receives. But, we do need to know what funds are donated so that we can clear the pledge the user recorded on the Foundation’s site.

We are not developing internally so I have no resources that can contribute to that part of the work but I would be happy to discuss/review your requirements or to discuss our specific requirements in more detail directly but this forum is a bit too public for further details here. We can do some testing and potentially be an early adopter if that would be helpful. Just let me know how we can help; In any case, please keep me posted as to your progress.
