I thought I'd post a couple of quick links to some of the development resources mentioned by me and others last night at the PDXDUG meeting. (Andrew, maybe you can add a link to the module metrics you were talking about).
As we said last night, don't play on your production site; create a dev/sandbox copy where you can wipe everything out if it gets gnarly (and maybe this is obvious, but make sure you're using a different database that the main site too!).

Books
Pro Drupal Development

Like any comprehensive book, it's only going to skip across the surface of some topics, but it does go over every part of the Drupal architecture. After having coded Drupal for some time before getting this book, when I refer to it I still find little nuggets in there that make me hit my forehead and say 'oh, that's much simpler than the way I was doing it'.
You can get it at Powell's, and there's 2 copies at the MultCo Library (or if you want it to go on your laptop like me, buy the PDF version). There's going to be a second edition this summer that will cover 6, but I always think if something like this saves a couple of hours of banging your head against the wall, it's worth it(same as it ever was - 1:30).
I haven't seen it, but the theming book is Drupal 5 Themes from Packt. I have read two of their books on other subjects, and one was pretty good while another was total crap, so you're on your own (as a company, I think they're just a step above self-publishing). Maybe someone else here can chime in on this.

There's several other Drupal books coming out over the next few months, including one from Angela Byron (webchick), a regular drupaler who has been a great advocate of better documentation.
I also found Beginning PHP and MySQL 5: From Novice to Professional to be a pretty good reference for starters (it's also at the library).
