Another approach to distributions
Hi guys, just wanted to let you know of a new (maybe great) service that allows experienced Drupal developers start up their Drupal projects quicker.
The web site's address is www.drupalmashup.interestsphere.com.
Purpose of the site is to come to the aid of experienced Drupal developers who have discovered that they rely on much the same collection of modules for a particular type of site. Once you've mashed up your collection you can view the generated drush commands and/or download the (UNIX shell) script.

I've created a custom profile with a task for submitting a form. I can't seem to get it working. The form renders and the task moves onto profile-finished but I can't call the submit hook. I've written a test version of it here.
Does anyone know what I am doing wrong?

I just tried out Drupal's installation profile feature for the first time this week and think it has a lot of potential. Using the Install Profile API and Profile Wizard, I was able to create a customized .profile in just a few hours. In the process, the following ideas occurred to me for ways that the installation profile system could be improved further:

Cross-posting an email I sent to infrastructure list a few weeks ago, together with Kjartan's response.
It would be great if drupal.org supported distributions by the time Drupal 5 will be released.
The two mails (by Kjartan and me) outline a way to support distributions in an easy way (both for developers and end users). So what are your opinions on this?

Are there any existing guidelines or best practices when it comes to developing specific install profiles and distributions? As far as I can tell, I don't see info on this type of contribution (http://drupal.org/node/22286) or a means to set up a project similar to how you'd do it for a module or theme (http://drupal.org/node/7765).
I think this question is relevant to the context of this group. Any guidance would be much appreciated.

This (somewhat old) post from Zacker does a great job summing up a catch-22 that comes along with an open source community like Drupal (allow me to excerpt):
<
blockquote style="font-style: italic">
- most of the value created by the Drupal community that vendors and consultants rely on to sell as services to customers come from unpaid core contributions
- many of the seasoned Drupal core hackers are getting job offers left and right to come and do Drupal consulting full time.
- This is creating a scenario in which while many more people are paying their bills through Drupal hacking and more and more business are built around business value created by the Drupal community, it is not getting any easier to make sure the heavy lifting on core work is getting done.
What can we do now to make sure that some of the money coming into the community over the next year is put back in to supporting the core work that we as a community are relying on?

Hello, all,
I'm putting down some quick ideas here to start getting feedback --
A distribution for Education will mean different things to different people: a set of tools to support classroom blogging, a set of tools to support teacher professional development, a set of tools to allow a school to track student progress (aka a SIS), a public-facing school web site, an internal teacher professional development site, a personal learning space (the PLE), to say nothing of the library sites, the LMS's, etc, etc, etc.
Drupal can do all of these things well -- some with existing modules, where others will require development. The question is, where do we want to start?
