South Melbourne Informal Night

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

Start:
2006-09-12 18:30 - 20:30 Australia/Melbourne

We're having a small Drupal get-together in South Melbourne on Tuesday, 12 September 2006 from 6:30PM until 8:30PM.

Venue: Railway Pub, South Melbourne, corner of Ferrars and Bank Street.

We'll make up topics as we go, but are sure to include Drupal, Drupal hosting, development, and just idle banter about how much we love it. We're new Drupal users, but have already developed two new sites, scubalot.com, and Grace redid our company website, spidereye.com. I've also packaged a Drupal installation for the Plesk hosting environment.

The Railway is a very casual Pub with great food and fireplaces on cold nights. Plenty of seating in two different dining rooms. We'll be sure to make sure the owners know we're coming.

Keep in mind this is very informal. We're certainly interested in hosting and doing more formal and structured events (or assisting Gordon with his), but for now, just want to meet other Drupal users and find out what the Drupal buzz in Melbourne is like.

I've signed up, hope I can make it.

I like the sites you've done.

Drupal did most of the work

Thanks. The scubalot site was really a weekend project for my wife and I. Actually, I had no idea Drupal was so fantastic. Tried many others and when we started doing the scubalot site we were both just going "wow this is cool" 24/7 for a few days. I'm a very experienced software engineer, and I could tell the moment I started digging into the source code that Drupal was "different". More good software common sense than I've seen in most every other Open Source CMS. So, this is just the beginning for us.

Hope to catch you there!

.. and I won't be able to make it tonight unfortunately.

Hope it all goes well, and I would like to come to the next one if possible.

I was looking forward to congratulating the new father. Have to catch up another time.

Just a note...

garywiz's picture

Just wanted to note.... we expect to be there as planned at the Railway. Even if it's a small group, will be good to meet some local Drupal users.

Also, the Railway has WiFi. Though sometimes you have to help them get it working. :-)

Sound interesting

Finally a reasonable time for me. How will I recognise y'all?

Recognizing us

If you ask anybody behind the bar "Have you seen that American couple that comes in here all the time and talks about computers?" they will point you in the right direction. :-)

Failing that, there's a room right off the main bar with a fireplace which faces Ferarrs street. Should be easy to spot us.

Yes it was good! Thanks!

Yes, had a great time and it was great meeting everybody.

Just for those who weren't there...

A total of 10 people showed up and we all gathered in the "big back room" at the Railway. Some food, plenty of drink, and good Drupal/IT discussion. Everybody seemed to like the venue and the time of the week. A few people suggested we do it again at the same time next month. I'll probably schedule another one at the same time next month unless there are any comments or suggestions otherwise.

Though most discussion was informal, there were a few topics of interest that got a lot of attention:

  • Lots of curiosity about Drupal HEAD and what's going on with changes.
  • Lots of discussion about Drupal internals and how much we all love how clean and well-done it is. Many nightmares about previous CMS headaches. Russell Porteous had some especially hair-raising tales of how their original Mambo homepage got hacked, and there was no way to salvage it despite many attempts, and since then Drupal has been running beautifully and "seems much more secure". I think it's just good code, eh?
  • Talked about training a bit and how useful it would be. That topic's going on strong in another thread so if you're interested in training, join in over there.
  • Everyone gave a bit on in-depth discussion about some of their problems and talked about the sites they're working on. Everybody except one person had some Drupal experience and there were a few "module-writing" discussions. Most of the people there had live Drupal sites and we surfed about on our laptops to take a look.
  • Grace and I talked about the possibility of offering Drupal-aware hosting as part of our Hostbuds platform. We were concerned that there was no way to really compete with US pricing, but we gave a little demo of how we're using Plesk+Drupal and how well they work, and there was more interest than we expected. We'll follow up with that soon. Also, in the future, if anybody has anything to demo or show off, it would be very welcome. I'll make a reminder when I post the next meeting.
  • Everyone appreciated the Railway's WiFi and the laptops were humming later in the evening with lots of mysterious stuff going in in separate groups.

I'll keep you posted on the next informal night.

Thanks again! It was great.

Nice to meet you all..

I really liked the informal method as we got to talk about other things that weren't Drupal based but of interest to most of us anyway.

See you next time.
