Hi Australian Drupal and PHP Devs

Lonely Planet have just completed a prototype project using Drupal. In the project we had to demonstrate a broad range of technologies, including B2B web services, mobile applications and semantic theming. The outcome of the prototype project is the kick-off of a CMS replacement project using Drupal a new content management framework.

Hence, Lonely Planet are now looking to fill a number of development positions. The spectrum of positions are PHP Software Engineers (Drupal experience not mandatory) through to Senior Software Engineers (with Drupal and PHP). There are approximately four positions to fill in a team that will be located at Lonely Planet in Footscray, Melbourne.

Experienced Drupallers who are not PHP developers may also apply. You should be able to demonstrate a few skills though: building Drupal applications and working with the Drupal community, experience with HTML/CSS, and the ability to do basic debugging, theming and retheming.

If you are looking to further your career with Drupal, this is a great opportunity. My experience with Lonely Planet is they combine the clout of a large corporate without losing site of the relaxed traveller's ethic. Developers in other states should consider moving to Melbourne for this one!

For further information, resumes, job descriptions, please contact Tim Liddelow (tim.liddelow AT lonelyplanet.com.au). There will be a representative from Lonely Planet at the next Melbourne meetup as well.

Thanks for your time!
Simon Hobbs

Which CMS replaced?

jonty_q's picture

Sounds fantastic that they are moving to Drupal - can we know which CMS it's replacing?

It's a custom system

It's a custom system (processes and custom software) LP have been doing CMS since before the software supported it. They had a failed project to replace their system with Vignette.

Shortcoming of Vignette vs drupal?

liorkesos's picture

I have a prospect where I will be measuring up with vignette and other propietery CMS's is there any additional information regarding the shortcoming of vignette (beyond the cost? ).
I am very curious about how they measure up and how the differences of approach (moduler and generic vs monolithic and vertical features) fare in the real world.
thanks
Lior

deliverables

I don't know vignette at all really (besides by name/reputation). There are a few links to check out:

http://www.a3webtech.com/index.php/cms-3.html
http://cmsproducer.com/why-choose-flexible-powerful-web-cms-drupal-compare

There is also another good link on IBM on choosing drupal I think, but I don't remember off hand.

Aside from all of that, I would say the key thing is deliverables. If your prospect has given you some tentative specs, I have found that demonstrating how quickly you can get something working is a huge selling point. Often big systems take awhile to get going, and you can show a full working drupal system on a laptop within minutes. Between cck and views, you can probably show them something pretty interesting/quickly and that speaks volumes to managers who want to have it yesterday.
