The History of the Indiana Drupal Group

2007

  • Earnest Berry proposed this group on June 11th of 2007. 10 days later it was approved and the group existed only online and never met. Earnest became very busy and traveled frequently and became uninvolved with the group. We all understand. It happens.

2008

  • In January of 2008 Doug Vann started making noise about getting together. He polled "Which day is better?" , "What part of town?" , "What do you want to discuss?" The banter was minimal and he decided to just schedule a time and a place and see who shows up.

ENTER: Kevin Finney!
The two of them hung out at the Glendale Library for the 1st ever Indy Drupal Group meeting.

  • In February, it wound up being Doug and Mike Goodwin from W. Lafayette. He showed Doug the COOL stuff he was doing with Drupal and Doug just sat back and learned!

  • March, fell through

  • April, we had our first gig at the MidWest Internet offices where Web Easy media is now maintaing their offices. We had about 8 people and we started giving away books because Doug wrangled up a cash sponsor for the group.

  • May, another successful MidWest gig.

  • June, a small gang at the Abbey (at it's old location)

  • July & August, at the DownTown Library which we quickly outgrew!

  • October 2008 was the FIRST Drupal-Indy Hackfest, suggested by Seth Dudenhofer. The event was well-received by the community.

ENTER: Tony Valle

2009
- September2008 thru July 2009, in these 11 months we had over 18 meetings most of them at Tony's place aka Promethius Consulting LLC. Aaron Dudenhofer stepped in to help Doug with the weight of the events and help line up presenters for each meetup. The group jumped dramatically in attendance from September through around March.

These were the HAYDAZE of the group which ended in July when only the same 3 or 4 people attended numerous times in a row.
The interest in the group was falling. Possibly because the areas of interest were changing on individual levels. Everyone was beginning to get into their own things, so it was getting more difficult to present on topics that would interest a large number of the members.

  • May the SECOND Drupal Hackfest with a surprise visit from the Cincinnati Group. This began an on-going friendship between the two groups.

  • August Break-Time

  • September Aaron Dudenhofer and Kevin Finney organized a cool private party for Indy Drupalers at Jillians Down Town where they showed off Jillian's NEW WEB SITE!

  • October Break-Time

  • November BIGGEST HACKFEST EVER! we had done 3 earlier hackfests and they all went well but this one proved that the MidWest facility wasn't big enough! Drupalers carpooled from Columbus after meeting Indy Drupalers at the Ohio Linuxfest. There were also members from Cincinnati visiting again, and combined with travelers from Evansville and South Bend, the group became quite large.

  • December Break-Time

2010

  • January , February, March, May Aaron Dudenhofer introduces the Drupal Dinners.

  • April Dinner was canceled due to members attending Drupalcon in SanFrancisco. The May Meetup suffered from it because upon returning a number of the Drupalers focused on returning to work and little activity was taking place in the usergroup pre-event.

  • May Neil Hastings made a Rally call to 'Get Off Your Butts' and started the Weekly Event Planning Phone Calls. These planning calls brought together a small group dedicated to maintaining activity in the group.

  • June Aaron Dudenhofer lead a Drupal Basics Class with the help of Neil Hastings. The class had a good attendance, as well as following on Ustream. This class has inspired more class-style activities in the future focusing on 3 tracks - Site Building, Theming, and Development. This is set up in a hope to appeal individually to these 3 very different areas of interest.

  • A few more dinners later, Doug Vann suggested something a little bigger than a HackFest. As doug described it, Neil interjected, "Why not just do a Drupal Camp?" And with that we were off to our first DrupalCamp2010!

  • November was our 1st DrupalCamp which attracted over 120 ppl. We had people from KY, OH, IL, TN, NC. It was Amazing!

2011

  • The leadership changed as Doug stepped down; sighting crazy travel schedules and a general dissatisfaction stemming from his perception that Indianapolis is a proprietary town with little love for OSS. ;-)

  • There have been a few dinners, a few learning meetings and the planning of our 2nd DrupalCamp for Nov5th 2011!

The Future!

  • The Dinners will remain to allow for open networking - This is meant to provide the social atmosphere for non-drupal project managers and potential employers (who possibly don't even care to learn about Drupal) to find Drupal talent

  • a return to the Hackfests OR possibly a Regional Camp have been discussed; due, in part to the ever increasingly congested DrupalCamp schedules across the country.

  • Cooperatives (Site Sprints) were once discussed which, in the future, could provide a service to the community and non-profits who need websites.
