Hello and welcome.
I'm running several sites using Drupal's multisite feature, and noticed the absence of a group to discuss the various issues and how-tos related to doing this. If anyone has any questions about the basics, I can probably answer them. I'd also like to see some tutorials about more advanced stuff like sharing database tables.
What OS is your server running?
Do you have a multisite test-server-environment with test-sites?
MySQL4 or MySQL5?
PHP4 or PHP5?
Is you running a multisite server?
Do you do most of your work from the command line, or from a GUI such as cPanel/WHM?
Is your server running a version of Apache 2?
10 Minute Multisite Install & Configuration (wouldn't that be great!):

Multisite 10 minute Install:
Server: LAMP
SSH/Telenet Client: PuTTY
Must have root access to your server.
If website in question is an addon domain, i.e., addon.mydomain.tld, then substitute "www" for "addon" in steps below.
For list of Linux commands visit: http://commands.tips-linux.net
Here we go:
Login using PuTTY
Get to location where Drupal core will be located:
[/]# cd /var/www
Upload Drupal core:
"x.x" should be replaced with the version of Drupal you're installing, e.g. "5.1"

My environment:

*WHM/cPanel

========
Common multisite requirements (as I understand them):
- multiple sites in separate vhosts, from single code base
- separate databases for each site (I'm not sure exactly on this: maybe each site has it's own database, but there is a shared database for...(as I said, I'm not sure on this one))
- test-site
- add to list
My specific requirements: (hopefully these are common enough that there will sufficient cooperation):

Help fund backport of watchdog external logging for Drupal 5
Khalid Bahey is well on his way to getting a patch into Drupal 6 for spitting out logging of watchdog entries so that:
1. They can be routed to a different source other than the database, from a flat file to syslog support. The watchdog table can crush many sites.
2. Actions can be taken depending on the messages. Get notification via email, IM, pager, etc. depending on the severity levels of messages in your watchdog.
This will be a fantastic feature for Drupal 6....but really, we need it today for Drupal 5 as well. I've spoken with Khalid and he's willing to backport both the patch as well as the supporting modules. The plan of attack is:

An early preview release of a module that may be of interest to developers and to anyone using multisites.
OG Sites enables a multisite configuration in which a central 'hub' site has a number of associated sites. The hub site features content and users from all sites, while each associated site can access only its own data (plus content explicitly shared from the hub site).

Is there any general consensus on the limitations of a true multisite configuration?
I'm thinking about hosting quite a few sites on one shared host. The sites I want to run are mostly going to be low/medium usage which I would suspect would easily run on a single shared unit under normal circumstances. The plan is to use individual databases with a shared codebase running D5. I'm looking to find out what people think/know about the general limitations on numbers of sites, and numbers of modules in this setup.

We're in the process of setting up our first multi-site. The primary site is a new domain name and we've got it up and running. The first secondary site is one the client is already using and doesn't want to move until the new site is built. To run our initial multi-site tests, we used a domain name we own but didn't have a use for. So now we've got a sites/correctprimary.com and a sites/wrongsecondary.com. They're sharing a Drupal installation, and we're sharing the users, roles, sequences, etc., but not any of the content. We're using singlesignon to maintain logins for the key users.

Here's a few links to some info over at Drupal.org in the Installation and Configuration section of the handbook that might help you get started or identify an issue you may be having with your install. As I come across more of them, I'll add them to the list!

Hi,
I see no activity whatsoever here. Is this working? I would like to discuss ideas with fellow groupers :)
Best wishes,
