services.drupal.org and themes.drupal.org

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

Disclaimer: It's just brainstorming. I'm not strongly supporting these ideas for now.

1) services.drupal.org
A place for Drupal commercial services. It would be:
- Yellow pages for Drupal shops and freelancers
- An extension of Paid Services forum section

2) themes.drupal.org
What about resurrecting Drupal Theme Garden? Users normally like it and its helpful to show that Drupal is not that ugly.

These are two of the trickier things to deal with I think. Thanks for starting it up, gives us a chance to thrash it out early on.

services.drupal.org

I'd say make http://drupal.org/services a nice landing page with explanations of the kinds of services you can get and where to find them.

I spoke to Moshe about what to do with jobs and the paid services forum, and he was keen to keep job postings connected to local groups on here. I think that means making something like groups.drupal.org/classifieds or similar (and allowing group admins to prevent jobs from being posted in their groups, pretty sure work is being done on that already). That's not necessarily a better idea than services.drupal.org and it also doesn't deal with the current list at drupal.org/services of companies/groups which contribute to the community. For the listing of user profiles who 'provide drupal related services', I think we can do that bit on my.drupal.org with user profiles and link from /services or g.d.o/classifieds

themegarden - I'd be more interested in making sure themes are well presented/organised on projects.drupal.org/themes - brining back themegarden into .drupal.org is a good idea, but not sure what the resources are necessary to do that (maybe just a DNS change?). Either way some integration between project and a theme switching site would be cool. I think I missed the original switch from themes.drupal.org to themegarden.org - anyone got a link to the background on that?

wasn't really a "switch"

More like a shut down and then someone else filled the gap themselves. The d.o theme garden was closed a year ago because of lack of people resources to keep it going: http://drupal.org/node/108543

User themegarden.org then made the outside site. I believe they did discuss with d.o about adding this back into the d.o namespace at the time (issue? infra list? not sure) but for the same reason that Ber said "this is not a call for volunteers" that was turned down. That requires pretty serious access to the d.o infrastructure and a real commitment to maintaining it so only well-established, trusted people with a track record of getting things done would have been accepted there.
