Orlando Meeting Wrapup and the Future

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

About a dozen Drupal developers met at Orlando Public Library yesterday to discuss Drupalcon Boston and future meetups in Orlando.

I gave a presentation about Drupalcon Boston covering Dries' keynote, the future of Drupal, and a quick summary of some of the sessions I attended. The rest of the time was spent with discussion introducing ourselves to each other and planning for future meetings and what we need to do to for the Florida group to gain some momentum.

We decided that from here on out, we were going to have monthly meetups at 1PM on the 3rd Saturday of every month at MindComet in Altamonte Springs. We'll alternate between 1 and 2 main topics per meeting (2 and 4 hour meetings). In addition to the main topic, each meeting will be open for 5-10 minute BarCamp-style show-and-tells for anyone that wants to present what they're working on or anything they find interesting.

Here's the schedule for the next few meetings:

Saturday, May 17
Getting started with Drupal - installation and setup - Joe Moraca

Saturday, June 21
CCK - Ryan Price
Views - Mike Anello

Saturday, July 19

Saturday, August 16

Saturday, September 20

Saturday, October 18

Have an idea for an additional topic? Let us know by adding a comment below.

We also talked about have a full-day mini-Drupalcon with a couple of classrooms so that we can offer a bunch of topics in a single day.

Here's a partial list of everyone that attended along with their Drupal.org username:

Sorry I missed it

Mike, sorry I missed this one. I'll try to make future ones. There's a whole bunch of topics I could talk about. Coder, Search, Panels/Views/CCK/Nodequeue, Issue queues, writing custom modules, patches, etc...

no problem

Doug,

No problem - if you look at the "future topics", Coder module is down there, I was hoping you'd want to cover that one.

If you'd like to do the "views" one in June, I'd gladly step aside. Just let me know.

It was a really good meeting - lots of motivated people. Should be fun going forward.

"we decided to start with a "getting started" topic in hopes of bringing in some new Drupal users."

It worked - I want to attend. I am intrigued with using Drupal for a project I am working on but the process of installing it, finding a reliable host, etc. seems kinda intimidating to me. I have publishing and graphic design experience but no real web design experience.

(Maybe dumb) question: is there a way to be reminded about this meeting a few days before it happens with a time/location/etc.?

Zach,

Glad to hear that you'll be attending.

If you go to the "My membership" link in the "Florida" block in the right-hand sidebar, you can turn on email notification. Then you'll get notified of any posts to this group.

Zach,I use hostmonster.com

Zach,

I use hostmonster.com for my Drupal hosting. They cost about $60 a year, and give you $50 each in Yahoo and Google search advertising. They specifically target Drupal and Joomla users and are very compatible with PHP/MySQL driven programs. I don't have any relationship with the company. :)

You can find a great tutorial on installing 6.0 at http://drupal.org/videocasts/installing-6

I recommend you play around with it before the meeting and then when you come to the meeting, you'll have lots of questions.

Hosting

Jack,

I've been looking for a new host too and just looked up hostmonster.com Looks good but there's no reference to Drupal, just Mambo and Joomla. Did you just install Drupal yourself? I'm currently with 1and1 and tried to install but have some issue with PHP on their servers. Apparently there's a workaround, but rather not have to worry about a time when there isn't.

Anyone have experience with http://www.siteground.com/drupal-hosting.htm? They are calling themselves the No.1 Drupal host.

Drupal Hosting

I have installed Drupal 5 and 6 on hostmonster.com myself and never had a problem. I also run Drupal on Site5.com, but have had several problems there. Hostmonster runs a newer version of PHP and MySQL than Site5.com the last time I checked.

I don't know anything about siteground.com, but I have heard nothing but terrible things about Drupal on godaddy.com servers.

I originally heard about hostmonster.com on the Drupal.org website, tried it out, and liked it. Plus, if you count the $50 each for Yahoo and Google search advertising, it better than free - you actually make $40.

Here is the link that convinced me to go with hostmonster.com: http://drupal.org/node/110531

Good luck,

Steve

Drupal Hosting? If someone

Drupal Hosting?

If someone wants to buy a domain name and point it at our IP address, we can work something out. Works well with Drupal 5 at least.

Flyer for May 17th Meetup / Beginner's Class

Hi, I am thinking on making a simple flyer (just powerpoint and printed in color) to put at the University of South Florida engineering school bulletin boards. Can somebody either e-mail me or post the address for the meetup. If done correctly we might be able to get some future enthusiasts for drupal.

Joe, do you have a tentative description/sequence-of-events/specifics for the beginner's class so that I can put into the flyer?

Thanks guys.
